Tony Utter Obituary

Visit the Downing & Lahey Mortuaries & Crematory - East Wichita website to view the full obituary.
Tony Utter was born in Anchorage, Alaska on January 13, 1952, the first of six children of Quincy and Patricia Utter. He was suddenly and unexpectedly taken from his family and friends on January 30, 2026, in Wichita, KS, after playing another round of pickleball, his new favorite hobby that he played regularly with his wife Carolyn.

At the time of his death, Tony was Managing Broker with Utter Commercial Real Estate, Inc. assisting landlords, property owners, tenants, sellers and buyers with 48 years of commercial real estate experience.

A life-long resident of Wichita and a 1970 graduate of Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School, Tony received a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Wichita State University in 1974 and a Juris Doctor Degree from Washburn University School of Law in June 1977. In October 2005, Tony completed three years of course work and testing to earn his Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation.

Tony is a Past President of the Kansas CCIM Chapter, Past President of the Wichita Area Association of Realtors and served as Chairperson of the Building Task Force for WAAR to oversee construction of their new headquarters at the WaterWalk in downtown Wichita that opened September 2008. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Guadalupe Health Foundation and the Wichita Downtown Corporation.

As much as he enjoyed working within the commercial real estate community, his heart's true passion was for Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. He was happiest and most fulfilled when he could share his faith with others. Tony was involved with RCIA (OCIA) which is the formation of believers who aspire to join the Catholic Church. He served as a Sponsor and Catechist. Tony and Carolyn were involved for many years with Marriage Encounter, an experience designed for married couples to improve their relationship through enhanced communication. Tony and Carolyn continued to be involved with their parish, Church of the Resurrection. Tony and Carolyn were blessed to have the opportunity to travel on numerous pilgrimages including the Holy Land, Rome, Assisi, Fatima, Lourdes, Santiago, Medjugorje and more.

Tony was an avid fan of the Wichita Shockers Basketball, Baseball and Softball teams as well as the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. He loved coaching his sons and their friends in countless competitive baseball and AAU basketball teams from grade school through high school for over sixteen years.

Tony is preceded in death by parents, Quincy and Patricia Utter; and brother, Thomas Utter. Survived by his wife of 53 years, Carolyn; daughter, Deborah (Cesare Motta) O'Reilly; sons, Christopher (Regina) Utter, Timothy Utter, Ryan Utter; grandchildren, Dalton Pybus, Shelby Pybus, Jonah Utter, Elijah Utter, Stella Utter, Scarlett Utter, Graham Utter; sisters, Janis (Jeff) Scott, Nancy Coker, Carol Troyer, Susie (Brian) Wolf; and numerous other extended family.
