Reflections of a Life Well Lived Tuwana Faye Jones was born September 6, 1954, to the late Robert and Myrtle Kirkpatrick Jones. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Layman Temple C.M.E., Bossier City, under the pastoral leadership of the late Reverend Grover Jaggers, Sr. She later united with Sunrise Baptist Church in Shreveport, where she served in many capacities, including youth coordinator and praise team facilitator. Tuwana continued to walk with the Lord until her last breath. A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Tuwana was educated in the public schools of Caddo Parish, graduating from Bethune High School in 1972. With a passion for travel, she left Louisiana to attend Breech Training Academy, a facility dedicated to training airline personnel, which had just opened in Overland Park, Kansas. She had dreamed of being a flight attendant. She returned to Louisiana and later continued her education at Louisiana State University, Shreveport, receiving many executive leadership certifications throughout her career. She had a stellar career with the United States Postal Service for 31 years before retiring in 2009. During her tenure, she achieved many firsts: the first Black female to run the mail processing facility in Shreveport, the first female and first black Postmaster in both Minden and Springhill, LA. She won the coveted Eagle award for service and was often featured in postal and local newspapers and magazines. Tuwana enjoyed her life to the fullest, often traveling and spending time with family and friends. Her saying was "You only live once so enjoy it while you can." Her love for enjoying life was only surpassed by her love for her family. As the oldest child, a single mother, and a grandmother, she poured her all into her family and uplifted them in all ways. God called Tuwana home on October 12, 2025, to reunite with many of her loved ones, including her parents, one brother, Robert Renee Jones, grandparents, several aunts, uncles and cousins. Mourning her departure, and cherishing her memory are: her daughter/best friend, Jamela Arrianna Jones-Plater, her son-in-law, Duntrea Plater, two grandsons (GT boys), Javien and Bryson Plater, all of Killeen, Texas; one brother, Tyrone Jose' Jones, of Shreveport, Louisiana, one sister, Benita Jones Harris and one brother-in-law, Arsdale Harris III of The Colony, Texas; three nieces, Carmina Jones, Jasmine Jones and Avari Harris; two nephews, Quantez Jones and Arsdale Harris, IV, along with a host of aunts, uncles, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.
Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 19th, 2025 at 2:00 PM, Heritage Funeral Home, 425 E. Central Texas Expressway, Harker Heights, TX 76548.
