Dr. Tuyen Tran, a friend to all, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2025, at M.D. Anderson. He was surrounded by love when he returned to the Lord with family members praying the comforting words of the Holy Rosary as he ended his pilgrimage on earth. Perhaps this was a fitting send-off for this man who cherished his Catholic faith and who clung to God during the most challenging moments of his long stay in hospital.
Dr. Tran was a generous soul whose smile could light up any room. He loved music and was known to break into dance without much encouragement. But his true love was his family. He was happiest when his wife, Yvette, and daughter Clare were happy. He made them feel safe.
His is a story of overcoming the odds. He was born in Vietnam in 1960 and spent his childhood in Saigon. But it all changed in 1975. With the fall of South Vietnam to the communists, Dr. Tran and most of his family left their homeland as refugees, flying out first to a temporary camp in the Philippines before making way to another camp in Arkansas.
He and his siblings eventually settled in Sulphur Springs, a small town in Texas. They lived with a sponsor family, the Stapletons who embraced them with unconditional love. Dr Tran carried gratitude towards the Stapletons in his heart till his last day. Later on, the Trans moved to a modest trailer, but for the Tran family, it was home. Dr Tran attended Sulphur Springs High School and graduated as a salutatorian in 1978.
He knew from early on that medicine was his vocation and attended Austin College from 1978 till 1982. His dream of becoming a doctor became a reality after he graduated from medical school at The University of Texas in Galveston. He practiced medicine in Kansas, Chicago, before settling down in Houston, where he worked as an internist with the Kelsey-Sebold medical group from 1994.
Dr. Tran was forever grateful to this country for welcoming him, his siblings, and countless other refugees. And while he was proud of his Vietnamese heritage, he valued the American way; where everyone who put in the hours could succeed regardless of color, creed, or background. He experienced this system firsthand when he became a first-generation immigrant professional.
Dr. Trans life was made even richer when he married the love of his life, Yvette, 19 years ago. She and their beautiful daughter, Clare, will carry on his legacy of love, faith, gratitude, and being a friend to all.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Dr. Tran is survived by his siblings. Mai Tran, Thanh Tran, Hong Tran, Dieu Tran, Khai Tran, Danh Tran, Van Tran, Hoanh Tran, nieces, and nephews.
Dr Trans family thank God for sharing this wonderful soul with them and for sending them so many angels during these challenging months. There were countless priests and nuns who gave him the sacraments and prayers and prepared him for his journey home to the Lord.
Yvette and the family would like to thank the transplant team at M.D. Anderson and the amazing nurses on the 18th floor of the hospital's stem cell transplant wing. There were numerous friends who prayed for him, prayed with him, held his hands, and let him know of their love for him.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five oclock in the afternoon until eight oclock in the evening on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at the Bradshaw-Carter Funeral Home, 1734 West Alabama Street in Houston, where the Rosary for Dr. Tran will commence at six oclock in the evening.
