V. Michael Dowdy (aka Poppa, or as his H E B friends knew him - "Big Mike") passed away on Saturday, February 17, after a brief illness. Mike was born in Dickson, Tennessee, on July 6, 1953, to Dollie Pearl Vaughn and Virgil Carlisle Dowdy. He attended college at Austin Peay State University and received his Bachelors in Political Science.
He leaves many behind to cherish his memory: His wife of 30 years Carol A. T. Sonnenburg; Son Dr. Zachary Dowdy & wife Alexandra Battestin, (daughters Margot & Eloise); Daughter Alexandra Kenyon & husband Paul, (daughter Palmer); Richard Sonnenburg & wife Natalie, (daughters Skyla & Jade); Jason Sonnenburg, (daughters Audrina & Arielle); Krystl Valencia & Jeffery (& family); Randi Beck & husband Aaron, (daughter Hannah, son Lance); sister Angie Eddie & partner Joel Hood; sister Cindy (CJ) Blanke & husband Tom, and innumerable family members and loved ones.
Poppa retired from Dow Chemical (formerly Union Carbide) as a first-responder/firefighter and operator. He worked part-time at H E B in Alvin and made many good friends working there.
Poppa's greatest love was riding his Fat Boy with his buddies to grab a beer down the road. Many trips were made with an exclusive group of dear friends riding throughout the country and to Sturgis for the annual Bike Rally.
His two most cherished prizes were his children, Zach and Alex, who he told regularly that he loved them and was so proud of them. Their love for their father showed clearly in so many ways.
You are requested to wear your Harley gear and ride your bike on this day of celebration.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite local charity and give your loved one a hug.

Mike was my Sigma Chi Fraternity brother at Austin Peay State University. A truly great friend and absolute joy to be around. I'll never forget him. So sorry he's no longer with us. My sympathies to his family and friends.

Prayers for your family through this difficult time. I briefly met him and cared for him in the emergency room. Working in the emergency room we often meet people that really stick with us, he was definitely one. I´m very saddened to learn of his passing. Prayers and condolences. He did talk about how proud he was of his family.

I have fond memories of Mike. I can't think of a single time I ever saw him without a big smile on his face. He was a very kind person without a mean bone in his body. May God rest his soul.

So sorry to hear of Mikes passing. He was my Fraternity brother, and lived close in our apartment complex. He was truly a great friend...

Mike was my roommate for a year at APSU and was a ton of fun. I will always remember coming home many evenings and he would be sleeping on the sofa in shorts and have the air conditioning set so low you would swear you could see icicles forming and the stereo would be so loud that you could hear it before you opened the door. I miss the times I spent with him and his sisters Cindy and Angie.

My condolences to the family of Virgil. I have fond memories of him when I was pledging and as a fellow brother of Sigma Chi Fraternity at Austin Peay State University. Daffy and I shared some good times together back then. A great guy. He will be missed I'm sure. God bless. Greg Quinn, Zeta PC, Eta Xi
