Valerie Roest Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dettling Funeral Home on Dec. 21, 2025.
Valerie Cegielski Roest, 81, loving mother, grandmother, and wife, passed away Friday, December 19, 2025 in her home, surrounded by family. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Roest, her parents, Wanda and Wallace Cegielski, her brothers, Floyd, Leonard, and Johnny Cegielski, and her sister, Gertrude (Trudy) Ferguson. Valerie is survived by her daughter, Sharon Kay Smith & husband Terence; grandchildren: Ethan, Emma and Liam; sisters, Blanche Kooistra and Mary Ann Lorton, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives.

Valerie was born on December 21, 1943 to Wallace and Wanda Cegielski. She grew up in a large, tight-knit family in Chappell Hill, Texas, and later moved to Houston, where she graduated from Reagan High School. Valerie was a long-time employee of ExxonMobil, retiring in 2002 after 35 years of dedicated service. Gardening was a favorite hobby of hers, and she even used to can and pickle her own produce.

Valerie will be remembered for her fierce love of and loyalty to her family, her quirkiness, and her quick wit. Although Valerie and Ron often had spirited debates over directions, they loved to travel early in life with their daughter, seeking out new experiences throughout the United States. She was deathly afraid of water but ironically loved the beach. Once retired, she loved to make spontaneous trips with her husband, Ron, to Lake Charles, and whether it was luck or skill, their winnings were impressive. She also enjoyed spending time with her daughter and especially watching her grandchildren participate in their numerous activities. It was truly a blessing to have her at home creating new memories for her daughter and grandchildren. She cherished family gatherings and holidays and loved relaxing on the porch. She is greatly missed!

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, December 26, 2025 at 1:30 PM at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, TX 77079. She will be laid to rest at Memorial Oaks Cemetery following Holy Mass at 3:00 PM.
