Valma Gene Bader, age 79, of St. Louis Michigan, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, October 20, 2022 from Alzheimer's Disease. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jim Bader. She is survived by her husband Richard Randolph and her children: Paul (Brenda) Bader, Mary (Jeff) Casler, Margaret Bader (Michael Dykstra), and Mark Bader as well as her step-children with Dick: Rich (Kris) Randolph, Ryan (Dianna) Randolph and Rebecca (Jason) Holland, as well as dozens of grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Valma Gene Bader was born May, 1943 to Grant and Elizabeth Miller (Kirkpatrick) in Sandusky, Michigan. During her elementary and middle school years, Valma Gene attended Hull Road School, a one-room schoolhouse. She then attended Sandusky High School where she starred in several theater productions. After graduating in 1961, she went on to study elementary education at Adrian College. In 1962, she met Jim Bader at a dance and was smitten. They married in 1963 and moved into married housing at Michigan State University to start their lives together. Valma graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 1965 from MSU. She initially worked as a special education teacher and, over the years, went back to substitute teach frequently. However, her primary job was devoting herself to raising her four children. Later in life, her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she spent many hours with them as they were growing up. They were blessed by her in many ways. Valma never met an animal that didn't like her. She was an avid equestrian in her youth and participated in saddle club with her horse Judy. Valma spent the first half of her life in Sandusky but later moved with Jim and her two youngest children to Ft Myers Beach, Florida where she enjoyed the sun and substitute taught. They soon got the yearning to be back in Michigan with their two adult children, plus Jim was missing John Deere. So in 1988 she, Jim and their son Paul bought their own store in St. Louis, Michigan. Together with Jim, Paul and later their son Mark, Valma was a part of the very successful "Bader & Sons Co." business that began with one location and ended with ten John Deere dealerships throughout Michigan when it was sold last year. One of the hardest things Valma had to go through was losing her first husband Jim to cancer, but one of the greatest joys she experienced was the new love she found with her second husband Richard Randolph. They met in the Florida Keys at Outdoor resorts where Valma had built a winter home and Dick owned a home with his brother. They spent many wonderful years together driving between St. Louis, Michigan and Lindsey, Ohio to be with both of their families. They wintered in the Keys and took vacations at other times. Valma loved her vacations! The best vacation Valma took was with all of her and Dick's children and grandchildren on a Disney cruise to Alaska in 2011. It included 40 family members! Other favorite activities for Valma included reading, biking, boating, square dancing, red hatters ladies group, bell ringing at Outdoor Resorts, attending Catholic Church, and of course just being with her friends and family. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the
Alzheimer's Association of America or the
American Cancer Society. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at 11 am at Nativity of the Lord Catholic Church, 605 S. Franklin Street, St. Louis. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 24, 2022, from 3-5 and 6-8 pm at Lux Funeral Home, 228 W. Center Street, St. Louis.
