Vanessa Brown, a beloved figure in the lives of many, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio. Born on October 17, 1953, in New York, New York, she was a beacon of light and joy for everyone fortunate enough to know her. Vanessa was known for her hardworking nature and her commitment to making a difference in the lives of at-risk children, dedicating her career to serving at Eastway and Daybreak.
Vanessa's journey took her from the halls of Garfield High School in Hamilton, Ohio, to Sinclair Community College, where she embraced every opportunity for growth and exploration. Her no-nonsense approach to life, paired with her caring disposition, made her an irreplaceable friend and confidante to many. Vanessa had an incredible talent for cooking, often gathering her loved ones for cookouts filled with laughter, warmth, and flavorful meals. Known for her love of butterflies and the color purple, she infused her personality into everything she did.
In addition to her dedication to her career, Vanessa was deeply involved in community service, often found alongside the H Posse, helping to feed the homeless. She cherished these moments and the bonds they created within her community. She loved movies, music and collecting cups and mugs from different places visited. Vanessa had a flare for dressing up and looking nice.
While Vanessa is survived by her loving brothers and sisters—Bobby Cannon, Christine Walker, David Brown, and Cheryl Hariston—as well as numerous other siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends, she will be profoundly missed for her infectious spirit and unwavering support. Two of her steadfast friends, whom she loved like sisters, Janet Calhoun and Janet Dunson, were constant sources of joy in her life.
She was preceded in death by her devoted parents, Noah and Littie Brown, her cherished daughter, Valencia T. Scott Brown, and her siblings Noreen Brown, Ray Brown, and Kay Brown, who now watch over her.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM at Newcomer Funeral Home, North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd, Dayton, OH 45424. She will be laid to rest at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery.
