WEAVERVILLE – Vera Ray Massey, age 74, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2025. She was born on October 8, 1950, and was a resident of Buncombe County all of her life. She was the daughter of the late Ernest and Willoree Ray. In addition to her parents, Vera was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Larry Massey in 2022; along with her son, Chris Massey; brothers, Rothy Ray and Gene Ray; and sister, Linda Buckner.
Vera was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved her crafts and flowers, and enjoyed her grandbabies.
Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Pam McCurry and husband, Keith and Shelia Hopps; sister, Gail Grooms and husband, Don; four grandchildren, Justin Hopps, Katlyn Hopps, Lucas McCurry and wife, Shelby, and Colton McCurry; and two great grandchildren, Maevery Sloan and Lainey McCurry.
Vera’s funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2025, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, Weaverville. Reverend Stevie Massey and Reverend Dustin Grooms will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Sheba Baptist Church Cemetery, Weaverville. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Vera’s caregivers at Aston Park for the excellent care they provided, and also to special caregiver and family friend, Paige.
