Vera C Smith

Vera Clare Smith (Schofield) age 99, passed away on December 6, 2025, at the Morrow Memorial Home in Sparta, WI. Vera was born to Lee (Archie) & Belle (Hulce) Schofield on the family farm in Spencer, WI on June 7, 1926. Although one of ten children, Vera's sharp wit and infectious laughter guaranteed she was never one to be lost in a crowd. Her adventurous spirit took her off the farm at age 17 and to Eau Claire. She met her soon-to-be husband, Howard Smith, and they settled in the Camp Douglas area where both Howard and Vera worked and retired from Fort McCoy in Sparta. They had two children, Bruce (Nancy) Smith and Shawn (Gary) Klinker.
Vera is survived by her children, grandchildren, a great grandchild, countless family members and friends, all who loved her dearly and will never forget her tenacity, wit, charm, grace (when pertinent) and undying love and caring for them all.
She was preceded in death by her husband Howard in 2006 and all nine of her siblings.
Vera loved hosting at their cabin on the Wisconsin River or at their home in the country. She generously opened her heart and her home to those in need of a warm bed, hot meal, cold drink and her own brand of timeless wisdom (don't be a dog in the manger) and iconic humor (you can't teach a pig about Christmas). Her home became an inviting revolving door for nieces, nephews and other family members and friends who loved her and will cherish her forever.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, 11:00 AM at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 E. Monowau Street, Tomah. Pastor Ian Fennel will officiate. Relatives and friends are invited for a time of visitation on Saturday at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
Vera loved nature in all forms, swimming, reading, family history, writing poetry & storytelling, playing cards, good food and cold drinks. She was generous and genuine to a fault. Please think of this funny and smart lady who has left us with decades of fond and colorful memories and SMILE. Bye, Vera. We love you to bits.
