Verlene A. Robinson

Verlene Robinson, 77, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on November 15, 2025. Born on April 3, 1948, in Kansas City, Kansas, Verlene lived a life filled with faith, family, style, and an unforgettable spirit that left an impact on everyone who crossed her path. She graduated from Central High School in 1966 and cherished her classmates and the memories they shared.

Verlene later married the love of her life, James Robinson Sr., and together they raised their only son, Shawn Robinson, whom she adored with all her heart.

Verlene was best known for her gift of doing hair — a talent she used not only to make people look beautiful, but to make them feel beautiful. Her chair was a place of laughter, storytelling, and heartfelt connection. A devoted follower of the Lord, she was baptized and a faithful member of Peace Baptist Church. She carried herself with confidence, sass, and elegance — qualities her family fondly remembers as her signature “baddie” spirit. She loved cruising, spending time with family and friends, listening to Luther Vandross, and enjoying a fresh Methanol 100. Her presence was magnetic, her humor infectious, and her love unwavering.

She is survived by her stepchildren James Jr. (Marsha), Elaine, Obzinder “Susie,” and Ricky (Veta); her daughter-in-law Jacqueline (Brandon); her grandchildren Whitney, Hailey, Ricky Jr., Eric, Cornelius, Latresha, Teneisha, Maseanue (Brian), Monique, Monte, Angel, Kyra, Shawn, and Sophie; and her 11 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sisters Mary Smith, Rita Taylor, and Elmira Smith, who will forever treasure her memory and the strength, wisdom, and joy she brought into their lives.

Verlene was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Willie Smith and Lula Cardine Smith; her husband, James Robinson Sr.; her son, Shawn Robinson; and her siblings Other Lee Smith, Willie B. Smith Jr., Bobby Smith, Roe Smith, Cleoplus Smith, and Arlene Slaughter, who now welcome her home in eternal peace.

Verlene’s legacy lives on through the many lives she touched — in her family, in her community, and in the countless people who sat in her chair and walked away not just looking better, but feeling uplifted. Her faith guided her, her style defined her, and her love shaped generations.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Peace Baptist Church, 2300 Chestnut Ave, Kansas City, MO 64127. The visitation will take place from 9:00am–11:00am, with the service immediately following at 11:00am.
