Vern S. Smith

Vern S. Smith, age 78, of Macomb, IL, passed away at 2 p.m. on November 25, 2025.
Vern was born to Virgil S. and Clara E. Henderkott Smith on August 23, 1947 in Macomb. He married Linda J. Allison on June 12, 1971, in Macomb.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Linda, one brother, Ron (Marilyn) Smith of Macomb, one sister, Linda (Everett) Ferris of Bushnell, one brother-in-law, Scott (Cheri) Allison of Macomb, one niece, Jill (Jeff) Klinedinst of Avon, and one nephew, Monte (Keri) Allison of Macomb. He is survived by a grand-niece, Sadie Allison, and grand-nephews Macon Allison, Blake (Madi), Lance, Tanner, and Reese Klinedinst. He is also survived by several step-nieces and nephews and step-grand nieces and nephews.
Vern enlisted in the Marine Corps in March 1965 and, after graduating high school and Marine Corps training, was sent to Vietnam where he received injuries that resulted in him being medically retired from the Marine Corps. He cleared mines and was an AmTrac driver. Vern worked at Builders Supply Lumber Company, Barry's Taxi, Gilbert and Shughart Painting, owned Smith Painting, and worked at Western Illinois University for 22 years as a painter and paint foreman. He retired from Western in 2002.
Vern took great pride in keeping his yard mowed and looking precise, and in the winter he plowed snow for family and friends.
Private graveside services will be held. Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home in Macomb will be handling arrangements for the family.
