Verna Jean Olson, 88, of Franklin, Nebraska passed away Monday, February 20, 2023 at the Franklin County Memorial Hospital. A Celebration of Her Life will be held 10:30am Saturday, February 25th, 2023 at Macon United Methodist Church with Pastor Rod Heilbrun officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Macon Union Cemetery.
Verna Jean Effie Olson was born December 18, 1934 near Council Bluffs, Iowa to Reuben R. and Effie (Trively) Anderson. After the death of her mother at Jean’s birth, Reuben and his daughter moved to Holdrege, Nebraska where Jean grew up. She graduated from Holdrege High school in 1952.
On February 6, 1953 she married Robert J. Olson at Holcomb Free Church. They made their home north east of Holdrege where the couple was blessed with children: Connie, Danny and Brian. In 1964 the family moved to the current family farm north east of Franklin. In 1968 a new baby girl, Tanya joined the family. Jean was a loving mother and hard working farm wife instilling an excellent work ethic in her family. She remained on the farm until Robert’s retirement in 2001 and they moved into Franklin.
Jean was a member of the Hillside Extension Club and a 4-H leader. She enjoyed sewing and counted cross stitch with numerous items displayed in her home. Jean also enjoyed working at the Franklin Sale Barn until its closing.
Jean remained faithful to God as a member for over 60 years at the Macon Methodist Church. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She has passed along to them her sense of fairness and the ability to be loving and accepting to all.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Connie and Steve Schmidt, Franklin, Danny Olson and friend Melanie Buehler, Franklin, and Tanya and Larry Hassebrook, Platte Center; grandchildren Michaela and Dave Wallace, Kyle & Erica Schmidt, Dena’ and Nate Dunse, James and Charity Olson, Jalesa Hassebrook and Kortney Hassebrook and ten great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters; Carolyn Piska, Phoenix, AZ, Dale Anderson Holdrege, NE, Darold Anderson, Kissimmee, FL, Janet Merten, Loveland, CO and special sister MaryAnn Olson, Sparks, NV; many other relatives and friends.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents Reuben and Effie, husband Robert, infant son Brian Olson and daughter-in-law Theresa Olson.
Family will not be present during the viewing hours, 3:00pm to 8:00pm Friday, February 24th at Hutchins Funeral Home, Franklin, Nebraska.
