Vernon Leon Burkett, 87, passed away on November 2, 2025. Born in Oconee County, he was the son of the late Edward Garfield Burkett and Annie Kerr Burkett. Vernon was predeceased by his wife of 57 years and his high school sweetheart, Joyce Ellenburg Burkett.
He retired from the grocery business and was a member of the very first Daniel High School Football team, where he was also a graduate. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, bird watching, wildlife viewing, baking cakes, and his famous homemade banana ice cream. He loved Clemson Football and the Atlanta Braves.
Survivors include his significant other, Mertie Honea, of Seneca, "his girls" Dr. Brenna Burkett, J. Brandy Burkett (Jennifer Wright) and Brittany Burkett his loving granddaughters, other survivors include, his Goddaughter, Tammy Jacobs (Tim) of Taylors, his daughter in law, Kay B. Burkett, of Walterboro, a sister in law, Wilma Burkett, of Six Mile, a nephew, Tim Burkett, (Penny) of Six Mile, nieces, Sherry Burkett, of Central, Becky Shirley, (Tim) of Central, Micki Reid (Blake) of Six Mile, his chosen family, Inglis Mangum, of Daytona, FL., and several other cousins, great nephews, and great nieces.
Vernon was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey Leon Burkett, and his brothers, Joe Burkett and Alvin Burkett, as well as his sister-in-law, Rose.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at Reedy Fork Baptist Church, 115 East Reedy Fork Road, Seneca, with Dr. Von Reynolds officiating.
Memorials may be made to Reedy Fork Baptist Church.
