Vernon Lee Moss Sr., age 82, of
McDonough, Georgia, passed away on December 1, 2025, at his home under the care of Southern Grace Hospice. He was born on December 3, 1942, in Madison, Georgia, the son of the late William A. Moss and Willard Lottie Ervin Moss. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Brynlee Thompson, three sisters, and three brothers.
Vernon was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, community leader, and friend. Known for his remarkable work ethic and deep commitment to his community, Vernon lived a life defined by service, generosity, and integrity.
Born with a natural athletic ability and a passion for competition, Vernon became one of Henry County's most celebrated young athletes. In high school, he lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field, earning accolades that later led to his induction into the Henry County Athletic Hall of Fame, a testament to his talent, discipline, and drive. His love for sports never faded; he played adult softball for many years, including a team at First Baptist Church of Stockbridge, and he later used that same passion to pour into the next generation by organizing and initiating the Stockbridge Little League Football program, creating opportunities for countless children to learn, grow, and compete.
Vernon proudly served his country in the United States Army National Guard for six years, carrying with him a deep respect for duty and a commitment to protecting the freedoms he held dear. A man of unwavering faith, he was ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Stockbridge, where he served faithfully for many years, always leading with humility, compassion, and a heart centered on Christ.
A respected figure in local leadership, Vernon served as a City of Stockbridge Councilman, offering his voice and vision to help strengthen the community he loved. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #691 of Stockbridge, where his character and commitment earned him the respect of his brothers. Professionally, Vernon was the proud owner and operator of Stockbridge Paving Company, where he was given the opportunity to continue the legacy of a successful business but also a reputation for honesty, quality workmanship, and loyalty to the customers. He believed in doing things the right way, a value that guided every aspect of his personal and professional life.
Above all his achievements, Vernon's greatest joy was his family. He loved them fiercely, encouraged them, and led by example in faith, work, and service. He leaves behind a legacy not only of accomplishments but of principle marked by perseverance and generosity with a dedication to God, family, and community.
Those who knew Vernon will remember him as a man who never met a stranger, who showed up when it mattered, who gave without hesitation, and who spent his life serving others. His impact on Stockbridge and Henry County is immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to live on in the generations he inspired.
He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Deanna Hipp Moss; children, Lee (Jackie) Moss and Roger (Beth) Moss; grandchildren, Heather, Brian (Ashlyn), Zach (Sara), and Mallory (Taylor); great-grandchildren, Tatum, Addie, Beckett, Emma, and Tucker; siblings, Lamar (Janet) Moss and Larry (Sherrie) Moss; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the team at Southern Grace Hospice, especially Luz and Wendi for their compassion and care.
