Vicki Lynn (Weeding) Oakes was born on May 15, 1962, in Graceville, MN, to Eugene and Janet (Homrighausen) Weeding. She attended school in Ortonville and graduated from Ortonville High School with the Class of 1980. Vicki attended some college in Moorhead, MN.

On December 20, 1980, Vicki was united in marriage with Dan Oakes at Zion Lutheran Church in Ortonville, MN. That same year, Dan accepted a job in Salt Lake City, UT, where the two made their home for a few years, then moved to the Twin Cities area and lived there for 12 years. In 1995, Vicki and Dan came back to Ortonville and made their permanent home. The couple was blessed with one son, Trenton.

Being a big part of the Ortonville area, Vicki worked as a Community Development Coordinator for the Economic Development Agency. She was also one of the MN Bump founders and the Ortonville connection/blogger for the website. Vicki was also a big part of planning and zoning for Big Stone County.

Vicki’s hobbies included video recording weddings, sporting events, and creating slideshows for many community events. She was self-taught on all of the programs she used and was a quick learner. Vicki was very active in the Assembly of God Church, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, attending Women’s Conferences, and attending family camp in the summers. She loved taking photos of anything and everything that caught her eye, had a great love of dogs, and enjoyed going for a leisurely drive around the Big Stone Lake area.

Left to cherish Vicki’s memory are her husband, Dan; son, Trenton; father, Gene Weeding; sisters: Heidi Weeding, and Stacy (Isaiah) Longnecker; brothers: Rick (Arlene) Ross, Tim Ross, Calvin Ross, and Dalvin Ross; nieces and nephews: Owen, Ellis, Cali, Bryant, and Chris Longnecker, Jesse Oakes (Emily Johnson), Jason (Lucinda) Oakes, Isaac (Kathleen) Oakes, Dani Oakes, Brooke (Reed) Oakes-Hartman, Justin (Rebecca) Hanson, Aaron Oakes, and Sean Oakes; along with many other family members and friends.

Preceding her in death are her mother, Janet Weeding; brother, Troy Weeding; and her grandparents: Frank and Wanda Homrighausen, and Sylas and Jo Weeding.
