Victor Dan Sessions

Murrells Inlet, SC - Victor Dan Sessions passed away Sunday, August 17, 2025, at Windrush of Garden City, fighting against the relentless tides of Alzheimer's Disease. Born in Dillon County on January 17, 1940, to the late Dan and Ruth Lane Sessions, Victor was an avid fan of USC Gamecock football.

He was happiest spending time on the beaches of South Carolina and was the epitome of a beach bum, especially after his retirement from DuPont, Florence, SC. Vic loved Carolina beach music and shag dancing. In the words of one of his favorite authors, Pat Conroy, Vic believed the sounds of "Carolina beach music coming up on the porch is the holiest sound on earth." Even during his years in assisted living residences, the ladies often formed a line to dance with him. His memory may have failed but he rarely missed a step while dancing the shag.

After his retirement, Vic moved to the Isle of Palms. He would often say those years were among the happiest of his life. His daily routine involved a five-mile walk on the beach and cooking a Southern-style chicken bog or delicious shrimp and grits. Vic was quite a foodie and through trial and error, he often replicated the recipes he enjoyed at his favorite restaurants.

In 2005, Vic's son, Victor "Kyle" married Stephanie Byrd. Not only did Vic gain an amazing daughter-in-law, but his family grew by two grandchildren, Lauren and Bryce. He watched them grow up and relished his role as Pop. When Pop lived in Florence, Lauren remembers admiring his saltwater fish tank. On the Isle of Palms, Pop and Lauren enjoyed beach days during the summers. Bryce recalls spending fun filled weekends with Pop on the island, watching movies and gaming until all hours of the night. Once, when Pop took Bryce out fishing in the little "creek freak" boat, their outing was cut short. They had neglected to insert the plug and the boat began to sink. They made it back to the landing, but the boat was so full of water that the truck tires were spinning wildly. Pop was mortified by the stares of the onlookers! But later, Vic would laugh about the incident in that contagious, side-clutching guffaw of his. Those who knew him best remember Vic's ever-present laugh that carried a hint of mischief, leaving one to wonder if he had more to tell.

Vic so treasured his family, especially his mother. While all but two of his mom's ten siblings predeceased him, he never strayed far from his roots, except during his time in the U.S. Army while he was stationed in Germany. As the first grandchild to John and Betty Johnson Lane, he was spoiled and loved by his aunts and uncles, and he reciprocated that love. From his Grandaddy Lane, he learned to fish, a sport he enjoyed throughout his active life. His Grandmama Lane was most likely the inspiration for his interest in Southern cuisine and cooking.

Survivors, in addition to his son, Kyle, and daughter-in-law, Stephanie, of Murrells Inlet, are his two grandchildren, Lauren (Tyler) Mullane of Charlotte, NC, and Bryce (Elizabeth) Gilbert of Charleston, SC, as well as one great grandchild, Hudson Prescott Mullane. Sadly, by the time Pop became a great grandfather, Vic was in the last months of his life. Oh, how he would have enjoyed passing on his loves and hobbies to Hudson! Victor is also survived by four siblings: David (Peggy) Sessions of Hamer, SC; Tony (Linda) Sessions of Florence, SC; Martha (Rusty) Davis of Timmonsville, SC; and Ruth Ellen (Michael) Perkins of Rock Hill, SC.
