Vincent Martinez, a lifelong resident of Glen Cove, passed away peacefully at home on January 7, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Vinnie devoted his life to service, volunteerism, patriotism, and community. He instilled these qualities deeply within others, especially his loving family. He proudly wore or displayed the American flag wherever he went—his love of country was his signature style.
Vinnie proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Zellars. Upon returning home, he married the love of his life, Sophie (née Scholz). He joined the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department and remained an active member for 65 years. He served as President of the EMS Association, Commander of American Legion Post 76, and former Commander of VFW Post 347. He also served for many years as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Hyacinth Church.
While continuing a lifetime of service, one of Vinnie’s greatest passions was the inception of “Vinnie’s Island.” He devoted forty years of care to this well-known garden spot, truly one of his most fulfilling pleasures. His love of gardening was evident whether tending to his flowers, fruits, or vegetables. He was a true Glen Cove historian, always searching for and preserving photos and article clippings to share.
Above all, Vinnie was about family. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Sophie; devoted father of Theresa Flamholtz (Clark) and Vincent Jr. (Mary); cherished Grandpa of Brian (Samantha), Kevin (Kaitlyn), and Lauren (Thomas Cavese); and adored Great-Grandpa to Delaney Quinn Martinez and Vienna Grace Martinez. He is also survived by his brother Felix (Dolores) and sister Felicia Plumb (the late Roger). He was predeceased by his brothers Aurellio (Sandra) and Anthony (Michelle), and his sister Dolores. Also surviving are cousins and many loving nieces and nephews.
He will always be remembered for his unwavering integrity, effortless humor, boundless energy, and love of sport. Words cannot express how dearly he will be missed—his legacy will live on forever.
