Vincent J. Matthews

Mr. Matthews taught my wife Debbie Ferentchak when she was growing up in New Providence in the 70's and 80's. We bought a house in NP in 1999 and occasionally we would bump into Mr. Matthews around the town. Debbie and myself are both runners so we would exchange running stories with Vince. He was such a gentleman, always happy and a smile on his face. It was always a pleasure to chat with him. Debbie spoke so kindly of him and has the best memories of her time in school when Vince was her teacher.

I am very sorry to hear about Mr Matthews passing. He was my 5th grade teacher and also taught my 3 older brothers. Prayers to him and his family. He was a great teacher and person. I used to see him walking around New Providence.

Rest in peace Vincent. What a great individual. My whole family knew the Matthews family. I would see Vincent at many of the local road races and he was a great runner always coming in first in his age group.
One year he was in Chicago on vacation and my brother Rich was able to get him a ticket to a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. He must have enjoyed that vacation since as the story goes he came back to New Jersey and retired from an excellent teaching career.

Mr. Matthews was my Grade 4 Teacher! I have many fond memories of him as a teacher. When I began running in high school he was one of my biggest supporters! Today, I am a proud school principal, and he was one of the reasons I ventured into education. God bless you, Mr. Matthews.
