Viola McReynolds Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by DeFord Funeral Home - Grangeville on Feb. 5, 2026.
Viola E. McReynolds, 90, of White Bird Idaho left this world peacefully at home on December 28, 2025.
Viola, (Hoot) as everyone knew her, will be missed. The cornerstone of her family with help that was needed in her day.
Viola was born on February 20, 1935 to Thomas and Emma Lindsey in Grangeville, Idaho. She began her life on the South Fork of the Clearwater River, nick named "Hoot" as a neighbor said, "She looked like a little hoot owl!"
The family later moved to Fiddle Creek in the Salmon River Canyon. Then onto White Bird. It was there that Hoot began entrepreneuring with homemade candy and popcorn made on a wood kitchen range, that she sold downtown on movie nights at the IOOF Hall. Hoot also held a cooking job for a hay crew on Slim Johnson's ranch at South Joseph. Along with various other restaurants in White Bird and Grangeville.
Hoot married Clarence McReynolds in 1953. They welcome two children into their lives, Emma Lee and Michael Carl. With family life in place, still a desire to serve, in 1963 the restaurant business became a reality with a double wide made into a café on Main St., Highway 95 bypassed the town of White Bird in 1974. Clarence and Hoot moved the café to where it stands today on the east side of Highway 95 just south of White Bird.
Hoot is preceded in death by her parents, her two children Emma Lee and Michael Carl and her husband Clarence. Also, sisters Bonnie, Josephine, and Elaine. Brothers Thomas, Gerald, Walter, and Darrell.
Hoot is survived by her four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. With many nieces and nephews and a great multitude of friends from near and far.
A celebration of Hoot's life will be held January 16, 2026, a graveside service at White Bird Cemetery at 12:00pm PST. With a fellowship meal to follow at Hoot's Café. Enjoy the memories of our dear loved one, Viola Hoot McReynolds. Arrangements are under the direction of the Blackmer Funeral Home, Grangeville.
