Virgil Alexander was born to Louis and Sue Alexander on June 23, 1943, in DeKalb, Mississippi. He was the youngest of six children. At an early age, he accepted Christ into his life at Unity Spring Baptist Church. Shortly after graduating from High School in 1962, Virgil moved up north to
Flint, Michigan in search of better job opportunities. He worked for General Motors for 30 years until his retirement in 1993. To say that he loved his family would be an understatement. He cherished time with his beloved wife Mary, to whom he was married for 48 years, and took pride in caring for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. As the patriarch of the Alexander family, he made it a point to stay connected with his extended family the Drake's, Slaughter's, Greer's, Hackney's, and Nichols' by way of planning family reunions, picnics and entertaining his family with his comedic "wise tales". Virgil was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching teams such as the Michigan Wolverines, Detroit Lions and the Detroit Tigers. He also enjoyed fishing as well as watching programs such as Wicked Tuna, Deadliest Catch, and Bass Fishing. Virgil was also a world traveler via programs including Bizarre Foods, the Edge of Alaska, the Discovery Channel and the History Channel. When not watching television, he stayed active by talking to his sister daily and mowing his lawn several times a week. Virgil Alexander leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Mary Alexander; sister, Dorothy Patrick of Philadelphia; MS, aunt, Johnnye Hackney of Ann Arbor, MI; and children, Lori (Kirk) Fisher, Sheila (Michael) McCain, Helen Goldsmith, Michelle (Maurice) Leflore, Barbara Goldsmith, April Alexander, Eula Alexander, Ernie Johnson; bonus sons, James Fuller, and Gordon Lawson. His grandchildren include: ShaVondra (Antwan) Bunch, Tysonya Goldsmith, Brittany (Ashlie) Traeye, Justin Fisher, Antonio (Shanda) Segrest, James (Shanquale) Fuller ll, Akil Alexander, JaVonna Segrest, Ernie Johnson Jr, Justin Walker, Shaniedra (Dequindre) Stewart, Lauryn Leflore, Jaylan Johnson, and Willie Gaylor. Virgil is also survived by 32 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, 2 sisters-in-law, Joyce Haney and Vester Johnson; one brother-in-law, Sammie Johnson; and a host of family and friends. Special mention goes to Freeman McDonald who was a lifelong friend, favorite niece Willie Ruth Clemons-Griffin and his "bodyguards" Londyn and Karli. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Sue Alexander; his siblings Ruthie Clemons, Eula Franklin, Joe Alexander, and William Alexander; and grandchildren, Virgil Lee, Tina Marie, Virgil Duane, and Armani Segrest.
