Virginia Hemmerly Obituary
ALLEGANY --- Virginia M. Hemmerly, 101, a lifelong resident of Olean and formerly of North 15th Street, passed away Thursday (February 6, 2025) at Field of Dreams.
Born September 8, 1923, in Jamestown, she was the daughter of Frederick W. and Gertrude Schleyer Hemmerly.
Virginia graduated from Olean High School in 1941. She proudly worked for the City of Olean and was secretary to former Mayor William O. Smith. Virginia loved people and being involved with them, and she enjoyed volunteering at Olean General Hospital for many years.
Virginia was a faithful member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. She cherished her time spent at lunch with the ladies at Red Hat Society, and loved playing bridge. A passionate sports fan, she enjoyed watching the New York Yankees and Buffalo Bills. Virginia also made special memories during trips with her beloved dog, Megan. She held a special place in her heart for her best friend, Frances Neiler, who passed away on March 22, 2018. Together, they created countless cherished memories through their travels and evenings at Chautauqua Lake, filled with dinners and campfires.
Virginia is survived by her nieces, Suzanne Koppenhaver, Penny Hemmerly, and nephew, John Kuhn, and several great nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Bernadine Kuhn, and brothers, Frederick W. Hemmerly, Jr., and Robert L. Hemmerly; her nieces, Joanne Diebler, Beth McFall, and nephews, William Hemmerly Jr., Michael Kuhn, & Larry Kuhn.
Friends will be received on Monday (February 10, 2025) from 11 am to 12 pm at the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home,3128 West State Road, Olean. A funeral service will begin at 12. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
Memorials if desired may be made to the Cattaraugus County SPCA, 1644 Olean-Hinsdale Rd., Olean, NY 14760

I will miss our Adventures!
The rides through State Park, around the streets of Olean, sharing stories, looking at Christmas lights, dinners at Perkins and Reds & Trudys, celebrating Birthdays and Holidays together.

Where do i begin, Virginia was such a wonderful and beautiful soul. I had the privilege of seeing Virginia everyday when i went to work, she was the sweetest women I have ever known, We would sit and talk all the time, she would show me all of her beautiful flowers, we would play this card game that she taught me, and she would kick my butt at it. Rest in Peace, beautiful angel. Will love and miss you always

I'm so sorry for your loss. I really didn't know Virginia very well, but would always talk to her when I visited my mom there. She was so nice and always had a smile for me!! Again, my condolences.

I knew Virginia from "the Old Neighborhood." For the last year we have spent time together weekly, visiting and engaging in one-on-one activities. She brought me great joy and I will miss her.
