Virginia's life was a Blessing, her Memory a Treasure (1937 – 2025)
Virginia Colleen (née Thomas) Johnson passed peacefully at her home in Fort White, FL last Friday evening following a multi-year struggle with cardiovascular issues. At the time of her passing she was in the company of family and friends. Virginia will be interred next to her husband at Elim Baptist Church on Thursday, December 4, 2025. Father Sebastian of St. Madeleine Catholic Church in High Springs offered payers for Virginia's passing in the Catholic tradition.
Virginia was born March 2, 1937 in West Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota. Her parents were Albert Roy Thomas and Genevieve Scholastic DesRochers, both from Prairie du Chein, Wisconsin. Her paternal grandparents were William George Thomas, originally from Ashtabula, OH, moving to Wauzeka, Wisconsin in 1876. Her maternal grandparents were Isidore Joseph DesRochers and Mary Louisa Lemire, both of Eastman, Wisconsin, settling in Crawford County in 1849 emigrating from Ste. Croix Quebec. Virginia had four sisters and brothers, Louise Marie Thomas of Chula Vista, CA (m. Joseph W. Fowler), Norma Jeanne Hartt of Lakeside CA (m. Walter Charles Hartt), Willard J. "Bill" Thomas of Escondido, CA, and Russell Francis Thomas (m. Berta Ann Thomas) of Los Angeles, CA.
Virginia grew up attending Catholic schools near Imperial Beach CA where her dad was employed by San Luis Rey Mission. During her childhood years she and her sister Norma were very close siblings, spending days at the beach and helping their father carrying out chores at the Church.
Virginia married Alton Brook Johnson, Jr. of Crestview, FL on Oct 21, 1952 in Milford, Utah. She had three children, two sons and one daughter. Her first born, Robert Brook Johnson, was born on May 15, 1953 in San Diego, CA. She had as second son, James David Johnson, born on 1 October 1954 at NAS North Island, San Diego, CA. Her daughter, Rhonda Lee Johnson, was born on May 10, 1956, in Jacksonville, FL. Virginia spent much of her time at home raising her children but worked as one of the first certified Nursing Assistants at the US North Island Naval Hospital.
Virginia was a person of kind disposition and impeccable integrity. Everyone who knew her was her friend for life, never uttering a negative word of anyone. She was loved by all who knew her. She spent her entire adult life caring for others and giving support in their times of need. She was a woman of faith and a devout Catholic all of her life. She has traced her Catholic roots back to her ancestors in France.
Virginia was predeceased by her son Ronald who passed in 2014, her two sisters Louisa and Norma, and two brothers Russel and William. She is survived by her son James D. Johnson and her daughter Rhonda Lee Johnson now living in Milton, FL. Virginia had seven surviving grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was loved by all her nephews and nieces and was a role model to all who enjoyed her company. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her gratitude and kindness will forever remain in our hearts.
