Virginia Sebra Obituary

Virginia Irene Cregger Sebra, 78, of Aberdeen, MD, passed away on April 11th after a brief illness. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 57 years, William Sebra, her two adoring daughters, Virginia Sebra of Charlotte, NC, and Jill Sebra, of Aberdeen, MD, and two brothers, Russel and James Cregger of Dublin, VA.

Irene grew up in southwest Virginia, the daughter of a farmer. She studied for 2 years at Radford University, when she met her husband and was married after only 3 months. Their travels together took them to Huntsville, AL, and then to Aberdeen.

In her long and varied career, she volunteered as activities director for a local nursing home and later became the first head of the Harford County Commission on Aging. She also worked for many years as a military pay clerk at Aberdeen Proving Ground. After retiring, she worked part time for the Aberdeen branch of the public library and then continued to volunteer there.

Irene had a heart for the earth and loved plants and gardening. She could name most plants and flowers on sight (and with their proper Latin names). While volunteering for the library, she also introduced and cared for plants throughout the building and was honored as "Green Queen" by her coworkers.

Her kindness and generosity will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. Per her request, her body has been donated to science to support medical education and research; no funeral or memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Maryland Food Bank or any charity dedicated to the care and welfare of animals, for which she was a benefactor.

Such a genuine, kind, and compassionate person. May her family find peace and comfort in prayer and precious memories. Gone, yet never forgotten.

Irene was intelligent and warm, open to people and ideas. When her daughter and I wed, Irene welcomed me completely as if I were her own. She was such a genuine caring and supportive person, it always felt good just to sit and talk with her. Those conversations, on a wide variety of topics, were a highlight of our visits for me. I learned a great deal from her and will miss those conversations enormously.
