Wai P. Lwin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2005.
Wai Lwin became an American citizen just last year, but he had dreamed for years of joining the U.S. military. As a young teen, he fashioned a dog-tag replica from paper and wrote on it in black ink: "Wai Lwin, General of the U.S. Eagle Squadron." "It was his wish to join the military since he was very young," said his father, Thein Zaw Lwin. Wai Lwin, 27, of New York, was killed March 2 when an explosive detonated near his vehicle in Baghdad. He was based in New York. Born in Burma, Lwin went to high school in New York and was a fan of American music, including Aerosmith and Jon Bon Jovi. He liked Lionel Ritchie so much that he recorded himself singing "Stuck on You" in a makeshift sound studio. Lwin earned his GED and worked at a restaurant and for a Manhattan jeweler before enlisting in March 2003. The week before he died, Lwin turned down a two-week leave to go to his grandfather's funeral in Myanmar, the country formerly known as Burma. He was carrying photographs of Buddhist shrines in that country at the time of his death.

Remembering Our Beloved Son, Wai Phyo Lwin
March 2, 2025, marks 20 years since our son Wai Phyo Lwin´s passing. It´s hard to believe how quickly time has flown... Two decades have passed, yet not a day goes by without thinking of him. I can still see him at LaGuardia Airport, boarding his flight to his army base in Texas, turning to wave at us with that proud, beaming smile. I never imagined it would be the last time I´d see my beloved son. We love you so much, Thar Gyi. You will always be our hero!

To everyone who has shared remembrance notes on this page, our LWIN family deeply appreciates your love, kindness, and thoughtfulness.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Lwin Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Wai P. Lwin US Army Specialist. We also place a flag in his honor each year on Memorial Day Weekend at our Field of Flags event, held under the Verrezano Bridge, next to Fort Hamilton and at each location where we conduct this memorial. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Lwin Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

To the family and friends,
I am so so very sorry for you loss. There are no words to express how hard this must be. I wanted to let you know about a memorial I am working on to honor the soldiers from the New York City Area. I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

To My Childhood Friend,

You had left without a trace before

But this time you decided to leave forever

As we were growing up in different countries,

Didn't know how you'd grown to look like

What your hobbies were, or

What your favourite songs were

Whether we had something in common

And I wondered how it would be

If we had a chance to get to know each other better

Although all I have of you now is

Just the memory of your face from TTC school days

There's a place in my heart

Taken up by you

And you'll stay there, always,

My dear friend "Wai Phyo Lwin"

With love,

In 1991, I remembered that day that Ma Cho, MCC, printed out your name tag and name tags of your sister and brother. I asked her for what. She told me that they are for Ma Myat Mon Kha’s nephews and niece who went to US transit via BKK. I knew that you are in US.

In 2004, I was in Ma Myat Mon Kha’s house. I saw one US soldier photo. I asked her who is he. She told me that you are her nephew. He was in Iraq. I knew that you are in Iraq.
