Waler Lee Shepherd

Waler Lee Shepherd Sr., 85, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away, Thursday, December 25, 2025, at the Meritus Medical Center.
Born Thursday, September 12, 1940, in Barrington, IL, he was the son of the late William Shepherd and the late Elsie (Janke) Eppler.
Wally graduated from Barrington High School in Barrington, IL in 1958. He later graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science. He was employed with Sterling Piper Funeral Home in Barrington. Later in his career he was employed as a car salesman for 28 years at numerous dealerships. Wally also was employed at Ingram's Men's Wear for 13 years, and also as a security guard at the Washington County Court House retiring in 2000.
In 2007 Wally was diagnosed with stage 4 tongue and neck cancer. After 18 months and several rounds of radiation and chemo, he was pronounced cancer free and remained cancer free.
Since 1985 Wally was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378 where he served two times as the Exalted Ruler and numerous other positions. He was member of the Hagerstown Shriners Hospital Club, volunteering to transport more than 500 children for hospital visits. He was member of the Barrington IL Masonic Lodge and the Hagerstown Masonic Lodge and the Moose Lodge.
Wally enjoyed traveling, especially going to Cancun, Mexico, he was a big Chicago Cubs and Bears fan.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years Rebecca Ann Shepherd, Son, Waler Lee (Tim) Shepherd, Jr., "the twins" daughter Sara Lynn (John) Bylak, son, Jeff David (Doris) Shepherd, daughter, Amy Noelle (Chris) Niebuhr, daughter, Rebecca Ann (Danny) Woznick, grandchildren, Amber Shepherd, Hanna Noelle Pawlak, Brixton Niebuhr, Brady Woznick, Daylin Woznick and Carter Woznick.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Kay Rateike, Betty Robertson and Carly Chapman.
Services will be held Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 11:00 am, at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North Hagerstown, MD.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, December 30, 2025 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. There will be an Elks memorial service at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 30, 2025 during the visitation followed by a Masonic memorial service.
Interment will be at the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD.
