Wallace Murphree, II Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 9, 2026.
On June 25, 1938, Wallace Allgood Murphree, II, was born to (Rev.) Hobart and

Winnie Murphree, in the parsonage of the Wedowee First Methodist

Church. Soon after his birth, the parsonage was torn down and the church

building that had been standing next to the parsonage was rolled on logs and

pulled by mules to the current site of the Church.

Wallace lived in and around Wedowee, AL until he joined the Army and then went

on to complete his education, culminating in a doctoral degree in Philosophy from

Vanderbilt University. He married Martha Kirby, from Rock Stand in 1961 and they

moved to Starkville, MS where Wallace spent his working years as a professor at

Mississippi State University. When he retired in 2000, they returned to Randolph

County, AL and built a log cabin in the woods on his parents home place, where he

lived until his death on March 3, 2026.

Wallace loved to sing and could play all types of musical instruments. He regularly

participated in several Pickin' houses, was a member of the Church Choir, and

presented original music and songs in the annual Randolph County Arts

Association Over the Hill Review presentation. He wrote poetry, music and songs

as a hobby and also was the author of two books and numerous articles.

Wallace loved everyone and was deeply loved by all who knew him. He did much

volunteer work, provided transportation for those who needed it, and helped

anyone in need. His life made Randolph County a better place and he will be

deeply missed.

He is survived by: his son, Scott Murphree, his daughter, Kate Murphree Baumann,

his grandchildren, Garrett Baumann, Jackson Baumann, Danielle Murphree Evans,

Rachel Murphree, and Will Murphree, his sister, Sarah Murphree Corson (and

family), his brothers, Rev. Jon Tal Murphree (and family), and Dr. Quincy Murphree

(and family) and is preceded in death by his wife, Martha Kirby Murphree and his

brother Phillip Murphree.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church of Wedowee.
