Walter Julius "Walt" Brockamp, 85, of Sioux City entered eternal life on Aug. 7, 2022, surrounded by his family.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Sioux City. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery with luncheon to follow at church hall. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m., Rosary at 4 p.m. and Parish Vigil Service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, 3220 Stone Park Blvd., Sioux City.

Walt was the eldest of seven children born to Julius and Mary (Crain) Brockamp on July 15, 1937, in a farm house near Ossian, Iowa. Later that year they moved to a farm northeast of Glencross, S.D., then moved to Timber Lake, S.D., for his start of first grade.

Walt attended St. Joseph Catholic and Timber Lake public elementary schools. He graduated from Timber Lake Public High School in 1955. He holds a B.A. Degree in English and Social Studies from Briar Cliff University and an M.A. Degree in Educational Psychology and Guidance from the University of South Dakota.

On Jan. 27, 1967, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Feist at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Aberdeen, S.D., and moved to Sioux City. He taught English and Geography at D.A. Hayworth Junior High School from 1967 to 1968, then in Student Services at Briar Cliff University from 1968 to 1983. He retired in 2000 as Director of Admissions at Western Iowa Technical Community College.

Walt served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963, the U.S. Army Reserves from 1973 to 1983, and in the 185th Air National Guard from 1983 until retiring in 1993.

Walt was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #743, and former member of the Sioux City Jaycees and the Sioux City Noon Lions Club. Many would remember Walt's smile from his years of bartending for the annual Boys' Club fundraiser and the Little Yellow Dog fundraiser, private parties and the Sioux City Country Club.

Walt served as Lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and as Eucharistic Minister to the homebound.

Walt enjoyed being with his family, especially his grandchildren and attending their activities. Other interests included basketball, football, cards, chess, checkers, reading, music and rodeo. He was respected by many for his generous heart, sincerity, warm embraces and witty sense of humor.

Walt is survived by his wife Mary Ann; four children, Sherrie Whitlock and Rhonda (Cecil) Bridges of Sioux City, Patrick (Marnie) Brockamp of Aurora, Colo., and Julianne Brockamp of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren Bryan (Sierra) Whitlock of Dakota Dunes, Kelly Whitlock, Michelle Brockamp, and Ceron Bridges of Sioux City, Tyren Brockamp of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Macy and Mandy Brockamp of Aurora; great-grandchildren Kayden and Connor DeMoss and Quinn, Emma and Blake Whitlock; four sisters Julianne Brockamp, PBVM, of Dubuque, Iowa, Carolyn (Tom) O'Meara of Rapid City, S.D., Colette (Paul) McDermott of Cascade, Iowa, and Rita (Bob) Baker of Buffalo Gap, S.D.; and brother Andrew Brockamp of Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Mary (Crain) Brockamp; and brother James L. Brockamp.
