Walter F. Gerstel, age 75, of Plymouth, formerly of Weymouth, passed away on Sunday, August 13th, at the BID Hospital in Plymouth. He was the devoted husband of Frances N. (Petrikas) Gerstel. Loving father of Diane Morrison of East Bridgewater and Andrea Thatcher of Plymouth. Grandfather of Reace Morrison and Elise Eileen Thatcher. He is also survived by his brother James Gerstel of Pembroke.
Born in Weymouth on February 24, 1948, son of the late Walter L. and Eileen E. (Wheeler) Gerstel. Walter grew up in Weymouth attending the Weymouth School System. In October of 1966 he joined the United States Army to serve his country in the Vietnam War. There he took part in the Tet Offensive and received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Following the war he made his career as a truck driver with Marshfield Sand & Gravel and later with Gallagher Building Supply. Walter was also the owner of Micro Popcorn in Bonita Springs FL. He and Frances raised their family in Weymouth and later moved down to Plymouth. He was the ultimate animal lover. Walter was known to bring home puppies, a duck, turtles, and even a squirrel. He was an avid boater, water skier, and was a great hockey player. Also enjoyed watching and feeding the birds.
A visitation will be held at the Cartmell-Davis Life Celebration Funeral Home, 619 State Rd. (Manomet) Plymouth, on Tuesday, August 22nd, from 10:00 am till 12:00 pm. Followed by prayers in the funeral home at 12:00 pm. Burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, will be private. Donations in Walter's memory may be made to the Plymouth Veterans Fund, c/o Veterans Services, 26 Court St. Plymouth MA 02360.
