Walter Allen Hemphill, Jr., age 94, passed away Friday, July 28, 2023. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 1st at Memory Hill Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Bradley officiating.
Mr. Hemphill was born in Hardwick, Georgia on August 13, 1928, to the late Walter Allen Hemphill, Sr., and Anna Marie Morelock Hemphill. He was preceded in death by his brother Raymond Hemphill, nephew Raymond Eugene Hemphill, Jr.
He graduated from GMC High School and Jr. College and received his Batchelor's of Business Degree from Georgia College. He was also a graduate of the University of GA Banking School and University of Wisconsin School of Banking Administration. He was employed at Exchange Bank for 17 years. He served as Vice-President and then President of the First National Bank of Paulding County in Dallas, GA. He was on many boards and served as President of the Paulding County Chamber of Commerce.
He enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting and get-togethers with the Newcomers Club.
Survivors include his wife Betty Wright Hemphill and his son Jimmy Hemphill both of Milledgeville, his daughter Susan Hemphill of Charlotte, NC, granddaughters Catherine Burke (Philip) of Charolette, NC and Jamie Hemphill Clark (Chad) of Athens, great grandchildren Eli Clark and Mia Clark of Athens, GA.
The family is requesting that, in lieu of flowers or gifts, donations be made to Cure Sanfilippo Foundation in honor of Walter's great-grandson, Eli Hemphill Clark, who has Sanfilippo Syndrome. Cure Sanfilippo Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that is leading the fight to find a first-ever treatment for Sanfilippo Syndrome.
