Walter Eugene "Gene" Markum, age 91, of Puyallup, Washington, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025, in the company of his devoted wife Shirley, family members, and caregivers from the Veterans Administration.
Born in Jamesport, Missouri, on December 15, 1933, Gene was the beloved son of Mae Arlene (Miller/Markum/Chacon) and John Rudolph Markum. He was preceded in death by his father John Markum, mother Mae Chacon, stepfather Al Chacon, sister Beverly Smith, brothers Byron, Herb, and Roger, son Robert "Bobby," and grandson Ryan Gassett.
Gene enlisted in the US Navy (1952-1956) and served aboard the USS Cape Esperance in the Pacific Fleet, visiting ports in Japan, Hawaii, and beyond from his home port in Alameda, California.
After his naval service, he built a life of hard work and community service across the Pacific Northwest: operating Gene's Tavern in Ritzville; building and repairing power-line transformers in Albany, Oregon; maintenance for Associated Grocers in Renton and Valley Cities in Auburn; as well as running his own mobile knife-sharpening business.
A dedicated volunteer Fireman and Ambulance Driver of the Adams County Fire District 1 and the City of Ritzville. Gene was a longtime member of the Ritzville American Legion. In March 2021, Gene was recognized by the National Commander of the American Legion for his 60 years of outstanding support of community programs throughout Washington and Oregon. Gene was an active member of the Ritzville Jaycees and the Ritzville Rodeo Association. He was also a dedicated member of the Puyallup Eagles, Daffodil Aerie 2328. Gene was often found on Sunday mornings cooking breakfast for neighbors and friends alongside his brother Byron at the downtown club. Later in his life, Gene and Shirley helped operate the HC Gritman Senior Center in Ritzville, ensuring those community members had a place to socialize, engage in activities, and have a good meal before returning home. Gene was known for his warm smile, hardy laugh, and generous spirit.
Gene is survived by his loving wife Shirley; sister Joanne (Orville) McClennan; son William "Bill" (Vera) Markum; daughter Keri (Deke) Gassett; stepsons Ron, Alan, and Tracy Jirava; grandchildren Jessica, Drew, Anneka, Melissa, and John; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
His memory will live on in all who knew him as a wonderful husband, father, brother, and friend. A friendly smile, a crisp sea breeze, or hint of pipe tobacco will remind you of his presence. He is missed and we are all better because we were lucky enough to know and love him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 14, 2025, beginning at 2:00 PM, at the First Presbyterian Church of Puyallup. All who were touched by Gene's kindness are warmly invited to attend and share memories.
