Walter Scharer Obituary
July 12, 1969 - October 19, 2024
Walter Duane Scharer, II, 55, of Shelby, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Atrium Health Cleveland.
Born July 12, 1969, in Pittsfield, MA, he was the son of Jerelyn Hechler Scharer of Hickory and the late Walter Duane Scharer.
In addition to his father; he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Kenneth Reed.
He is survived by his wife, Pamala Starnes Scharer; daughter, Catee-Blythe Rana and husband Sanveer of Anchorage, AK; son, Walter "Beau" Scharer III of Anchorage, AK; stepdaughter, Abigail Icard of Wilmington, NC; and two sisters, Lauralyn Scharer Reed of Claremont, NC, and Joanne Scharer and husband Rick Ramsey of Corvallis, OR.
Walt was a proud graduate of St. Stephens High School where he served as student body president and captain of the football team. He continued his education at Wofford College before completing his Master's Degree in city and regional planning at Clemson University. He was a brother of the Sigma Nu fraternity.
His love of his profession as a city planner brought him to Shelby, NC, which allowed him to raise his children closer to his family in Hickory, NC. He also loved boating, football, and being of service to others.
Walt was a kind person with a big heart and his final act of kindness was to give the gift of life through organ donation to help others have a second chance.
A service to celebrate Walt's life will be held Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 5 p.m., in the chapel at Bass-Smith Funeral Home.
