Walter Daniel Severin July 11, 1955 – October 12, 2025
Walter Daniel Severin, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025, at the age of 70.
Born in Washington State and raised in California, Dan eventually made Georgia his home, where he and his wife, Karin, built a beautiful life together and raised their three daughters - Rachel, Elise, and Heather. Dan and Karin shared 51 wonderful years together, a partnership defined by deep love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. He never left the house or came home without kissing her, a small gesture that spoke volumes about the life they shared. Together, they shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and travel, surrounded by the family they built and cherished.
Dan loved his family more than anything in the world and was endlessly proud of them. He would do anything to provide, support, or simply make them laugh with one of his famous dad jokes.
Dan spent 37 years at Lockheed, where he worked on the F-22 fighter jet - a career that filled him with pride and purpose. A brilliant and endlessly curious man, he loved coding computers, solving puzzles, and learning something new every day.
He also held his private pilot's license and had a lifelong fascination with flight - from the skies above to the model airplanes he built in his workshop, including a balsa wood plane that he actually flew. Dan loved to build and believed it was important to show his daughters how to fix things around the house. He embraced their hobbies wholeheartedly - crafting horse jumps, wiring Heather's miniature displays so they all lit up at once, and cheering them on through every adventure.
Dan was also an avid bridge player who came close to earning the title of Bridge Master. His skill and competitive spirit earned him multiple trophies and awards, but more importantly, a community of close friends who shared his passion for the game.
Dan's creativity and mischievous spirit often went hand in hand. He enjoyed fireworks - enough to travel out of Georgia to find the "good ones." One Fourth of July, after throwing his shoulder out mid-celebration, he casually popped it back in so the party could continue. He was famous for his homemade "Danny bombs," his inventive projects, and occasionally involved a little explosion or two, always with a grin and a laugh.
He also loved the simple joys of life - he enjoyed cheese, real or fake and little smokeys, for starters. Whether he was battling the family dog for his recliner or shakily writing a check for another horse, Dan did anything to make his daughters happy. He treasured the annual tradition of picking up the Christmas ham with his girls and sneaking a piece together - "Mom could never know!" He insisted on hanging the old multicolored Christmas lights around the door because, as he said, they gave the house "charm." And when Elton John blared through the house everyone knew Dad was rocking out on his "air piano."
Dan was the son of Walter and Martha Severin and is survived by his devoted wife Karin; his daughters Rachel Brown, Elise Macdonald, and Heather Schefer; his sister Linda Girton and brother Leon Severin; and his grandchildren Cora and Levi - with two more grandsons on the way.
Dan's family and friends will remember him for his humor, intelligence, and the unwavering love he gave so freely. He taught everyone around him how to work hard, laugh often, and love deeply. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Walter, please visit our floral store.
