Walter George Simpson, Jr., affectionately known as "Sonny" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, September 7, 2025, at The Legend at Tulsa Hills in Tulsa, OK. He was born on July 3, 1936, in Tulsa, OK. Sonny's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family and his country.
Sonny attended school in Tulsa and went to Tulsa Central High School. His strong sense of duty led him to serve his country with honor in the United States Air Force. Enlisting on July 31, 1954, he served until his honorable discharge on December 13, 1957. Sonny's commitment to service continued long after his military career, as he worked diligently for the City of Tulsa in Airport Maintenance and later at American Airlines in Fleet Service. His 27 years with American Airlines were a testament to his hard work and loyalty, values he held dear until his retirement.
Family was the cornerstone of Sonny's life. He is survived by his sons, Grover Lee Simpson and his wife Sondra of Sapulpa, OK, and David Gene Simpson of Tulsa, OK. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Devin Lee Simpson and his wife Ashley of Edmond, OK, and Sarah Simpson of Tulsa, OK. Sonny also leaves behind his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Chaplain Steve and Pat Fisher of Coweta, OK, as well as numerous other relatives who will miss him deeply.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lola Jane Simpson, and his parents, Hazel Deloris and Grover Lee "Sleepy" Wilkerson.
Sonny's life was filled with joyous moments, many of which were spent cheering on his sons at sporting events, where he never missed a chance to film their football games. His love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life, especially in the time he dedicated to his grandchildren. The love story he shared with his wife, Lola Jane Fisher, whom he married on November 3, 1958, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was one for the ages and will continue to inspire those who knew them.
Sonny's life was a testament to the values of family, service, and community, and his memory will be honored in the hearts of those he touched.
