Dear Ann, Wes and Katie, All his Sisters, Grandchildren and all his family members.. Please accept my belated sincerest heartfelt condolences. I had the honor and privilege of going to USC at the same time as him and by way of alphabetical order I got the room next to his and we immediately hit it off. Both being away from home and on our own for the first time I knew when I met Walt I found a friend I could depend on and trust. He was my home away from home. He was like a brother to me.. We hung out for 2 years and had so many experiences I can't begin to tell you.. Went to every Gamecock football game and basketball game, Saw numerous great bands together.. Janis Joplin and the Holding Company, The Four Seasons, The Young Rascals, Chambers Brothers and the list goes on.. I left in 1970.. Walt drove up to my hometown in upstate NY.. Saratoga Springs sometime to see me maybe around 1974 or 1975 but Only stayed maybe an hour and so and it was the last time i saw this great gentleman..I last spoke to him about 1999? and took all his information but packed it up when i sold my home in 2000 and started a new career. I planned on renewing our friendship in our senior years and just unpacking some of my old boxes just the other day and ran across his numbers and address.. which I immediately called and got a disconnected number and so I googled him and this came up. I am so heartbroken. I thought Walt would be around forever.. I was assuming he had longevity like his parents whom I think lived to be quite old.. I've thought of Walt all through the years. Every time I hear "I heard it through the Grapevine", Shout by the Chamber Brothers, The Young Rascals "Good Lovin" and A Place in The Sun I think of Walter.. I've never been on Social media but just joined Facebook to see if I could at least locate Wes and thankfully I did. He posted some nice pictures of my friend.. Of course I remember him with that dark brown curly hair like that picture from 1977. Thank you so much for posting those pictures.. I also have a daughter named Katie... He an I were so much alike.. He taught me how to eat those damned grits down there by putting sugar on them.. One of the hardest things about growing old is seeing your friends go before you. I will live out my days with a certain sadness hanging over me for not getting back to him sooner. I see the Pride and joy that he had for his family in his face in those pictures.. What a great picture of him with Bill Clinton.... He was quite the Man.. I'm wondering if he may have driven up to Saratoga with you Ann?? It was so long ago.. almost a half a century and I can't quite remember but I think he had someone with him and that would have been you maybe around 75?? Anyways.. I'll be in touch at some point with you Wes, Ann and Katie. I always got strength from knowing Walt was in the world. My only hope now is that Walt will be waiting at the Gate if I am ever so lucky to make it there..They don't come any better than Walt.. My thoughts and prayers to all his family.. My condolences to all. Walter and I go back to the pick up basketball games in Fair Lawn , NJ. He was one of the reasons I chose to attend USC. Walter was a consummate sports fan, in nearly every sport, before anyone dreamed of ESPN. He followed Carolina sports, and his beloved NY Yankees, and everything else.
We had a terrific friendship for many years; so sorry to hear of his passing.
Walter Standish was a "stand up guy". He was a fine man.

Walt was kind, intelligent, witty, self deprecating, and a gentleman. What more could one ask for in a friend? Ann and Wes I shall miss my friend.

I am heartbroken to hear of Walt's passing. I worked with him for 5 years at Beach First, and he was a pleasure to work with and work for. He assisted me in my career numerous times since as well. What a loss for our community. Prayers for peace to Ann and all of his family and friends.
