Walter was one of the very first people I met at H.D.E.S. His stories were told with fondness, warmth, and compassion. They were also highly entertaining! I loved hearing him speak Spanish. Walter would come into my 3rd grade classroom and the delight and hope that he was there to work with them showed on the students' faces. I admired him and am grateful that I had the opportunity to hear about his life experiences and get to know him. My condolences go out to his family.

When I first met Mr Sterling in 1st grade, his love of languages, travel, and learning (and his endless stories- of which I wish I could have heard more of) helped inspire the same continuing curiosity in me. I'm thankful for that, and that we kept in contact through the years, as he was one of the most extrordinary people I've ever had the fortune of meeting. I can only hope that I'll live a life that includes as much exploration and impact on others as his.

Walter was my neighbor when I was just a kid on Central Street. He ha d a large room in his house from what I remember was filled with cool stuff from many different countries. In the summer time he would invite us all over to swim in his pool. Walter and my grandmother were really close friends when we lived on Central Street. He will always be a big part of my childhood and will be missed.

So sorry to hear of Walter's passing. Walter was a true gem! He was a fantastic storyteller of his life's adventures. He could tell a story like no other! He also showed such passion and compassion for his ESOL students, their families. He went above and beyond to support them. He worked with many students in my classes over the years and all of us at HDES were enriched by having him there. Praying for your comfort and peace and warm memories of this dear man!
