Wanda Norton Obituary

Wanda Elaine Norton, 84, of Lee's Summit, Missouri, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025, surrounded by her loving family, in her home.

She was born in Holton, Kansas, to Leslie and Helen Marie Oden. Wanda was raised on a farm near Holton, later moved to Lee's Summit, Missouri, and then Kansas City, Missouri, graduating from Center High School in 1959. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science's degree in Elementary Education from Central Missouri University, followed by a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and a Specialist Degree in Education.

While working a summer job at Western Auto, Wanda met Shelby G. Norton on a blind date arranged by a co-worker. After completing her first year of teaching at Westview Elementary School in the Lee's Summit School District, she took a trip of a lifetime to the new state of Hawaii with her cousin, Janet. Upon her return, she continued teaching and soon became engaged to Shelby, so the blind date must have worked out. The two were married in November 1964 and shared 40 wonderful years together until his passing in May 2005.

Wanda and Shelby raised three children: Yvonne C. Holt, Brian K. Norton, and Leanne Norton. She was the proud grandmother of Alexander (Amanda) Holt, Alleana Holt, Anthony (Rachel) Holt, and Alysha Holt; great-grandmother to nine; and great-great-grandmother to one precious girl.

A lifelong educator, Wanda devoted 37 years to teaching at Westview Elementary, where she taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades - all in the same classroom. Known for her hands-on science lessons and her dedication to students with special abilities, she inspired generations of children who continued to stay in touch long after her retirement in 2000.

In her youth, Wanda earned the Curved Bar, the highest honor in Girl Scouting at the time. She was an active member of Lee's Summit Christian Church and the Lee's Summit Historical Museum and Society, where she enjoyed creating displays, conducting research, and giving educational tours. She was also a member of the Missouri State Retired Teachers Association and cherished her weekly card games with her beloved "Chicks."

Wanda had a lifelong passion for family history, faithfully chronicling her family's lineage, stories, and many adventures. She fulfilled her dream of visiting all 50 states and countless national and state parks, always learning and exploring along the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Helen Marie Oden; her husband, Shelby G. Norton; daughter-in-law, Diana L. Norton; brother, Galen L. Oden; and sister-of-the-heart, Marilyn Parsons, along with many beloved family members and friends.

Wanda will be remembered for her kind heart, sharp wit, and steadfast love for her family, friends, and community. Her legacy of service, education, and warmth will continue to touch lives for years to come.

Visitation will be 1pm, followed by a Celebration of Life at 2pm, Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Lane Avenue Baptist Church, 9003 E. 87th St., Raytown, MO 64138. Memorial contributions may be made in Wanda's honor to the Lee's Summit Historical Museum, 220 SW Main Street, Lee's Summit, MO.
