WANDA MAE SCHULBERG
(06-15-31 – 09-07-25) passed away Sunday evening, September 7, 2025, after an eight-month battle with liver cancer…
Born Wanda Mae Youngmark on June 15, 1931, in Clarkfield, MN, to Levi and Inez (Zeuthen) Youngmark, Wanda spent her younger years on her family farm in Clarkfield, Minnesota (Hazel Run) until 1944 when she lost her father. She talked often of her love of following her father around the farm daily and playing with her two kittens,
"Bluey" and "Geeny."
After her father's death in 1944, they lost the farm, and she and her mother moved to Minneapolis to stay with family. Mom (Wanda) always talked about the days at "32nd & Portland" with her mother, grandmother, aunts & uncles… She attended and was confirmed at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. She shared fond memories of her favorite pastor, Pastor Youngdahl.
She graduated from Central High School, Minneapolis, MN, Class of 1949, and spent the summer on a "dude ranch" in Colorado.
Back in Minneapolis, she dabbled in modeling, was a legal secretary in a law firm, and she later joined Northwest Airlines as a flight attendant where she met, and later married, Donald (William) Schulberg, a captain with Northwest.
To that union they added seven children (all within ten years): Bradly Ross, Bruce Reed, Scott Brandon, Cynthia Leigh, Nicole De, Kristin Marie, and Matthew Levi.
The couple later divorced, and Wanda returned to the working world where she spent time as a part-time nanny. Word of mouth got around, and she was highly sought after!
(Wanda/Mom) later became an "Estate Supervisor" for the Kelley Family of Bloomington, MN, from which she retired in 2014 at the age of 83.
Wanda's children were always her top priority! (We) meant the absolute world to her! She went from being an only child, to having a "brood of seven," and loving every minute of it! She adored her grandchildren and celebrated each one with love and affection. She was always willing to lend an ear, and she was the first one many went to when they needed to talk or glean some of her loving, non-judgmental advice.
Her favorite times were holidays when everyone was together; the more "noise," the better! You would often find her down at the piano on a Saturday morning, playing and singing "The Lord's Prayer," "Blue Spanish Eyes," "Blue Moon," or even "The Gambler," on occasion… She LOVED that one!
As she was always one to attend her Central High School Reunions, she met her very special significant other, Carl Hanson, at their 35th Reunion, and they were together for 39 years traveling, attending the theatre, dancing, and enjoying Masquers functions … until his passing in May 2020.
Mom was very proud of her Icelandic Heritage (a pride she has shared with many of her children and grandchildren). She was a member of the Icelandic Hekla Club of Minneapolis/St. Paul. She was blessed to be able to travel to Reykjavik, Iceland, several years ago, to visit the family homestead. Many of us hope to do the same!
Wanda loved her home! She loved working outside in her yard… planting, mowing, weeding… She had also been known to get up on an extension ladder, once or twice, on her balcony and paint the house… much to our horror when we found that out later!
Thankfully, she took up "safe" painting (& sketching) later in life, an incredible talent she acquired from her own mother, our Grandma Youngmark! Mom produced some remarkable pieces that will be forever treasured.
Wanda, her beautiful smile and infectious laugh, will be forever missed and loved by so many! She was truly God's gift to all of us!
Wanda (Mom) is/was preceded in death by her parents, Levi & Inez Youngmark, one infant brother at birth, and her significant other, Carl Hanson.
She is survived by: Bradly Schulberg, his daughter, Hannah; Bruce Schulberg, Leigh (& Mike) Hanson; Lauren (& Nick) Schneeman, Joseph & Callum; Scott Schulberg; Cynthia Schulberg & Geno Elarcosa; Nicole Dyson, Brianna (& Driss) Dyson-Houssa, & Amel Rose; Adam Dyson (& significant other, Lizzy Bayard), and Braedon (& Lindsey Thaden) Dyson, and Brynn; Kristin Johnson, Haydn (& Hannah) Johnson, Emery & Kallahan; Harrison Johnson, and Matthew Schulberg, Abigail & Sydney Schulberg.
Wanda … Mom … "Amma" … "W.W." … Forever in our Hearts!
What an incredible blessing and privilege it has been to be able to call you ours!
