Ward Knutson

1962 - 2025

Ward Knutson, 63, Strawberry Lake, ND, died Sunday, November 9, 2025, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Ward Lee Knutson was born August 24, 1962, in Minot, ND, the son of Ernest and Greta (Grinberg) Knutson. He was raised and educated in Velva and graduated from Velva High School in 1980. He continued his education at North Dakota State School of Science (NDSSS) in Wahpeton, ND, where he graduated in 1985 with an Associate of Science degree in electronics.

Ward married the love of his life, Donna Rist, on August 9, 1986, in Velva. Their union was blessed with two children - Kyle, born in 1990, and Karli, born in 1994.

In 1988, Ward and Donna moved to Bismarck, where Ward worked for Dakota Appliance as a television repairman. He then worked for the local cable company and later for Bismarck Public Schools. He served BPS for 14 years in the IT Department as a Network Coordinator. Ward eventually accepted a position with Doosan (Bobcat), where he had been employed since 2011 as a Senior Telecommunication Analyst.

Ward took great pride in his work at Doosan (Bobcat) and deeply valued the friendships he built there. He was known for his strong work ethic, quick wit, and willingness to help anyone who needed it. His coworkers were more than colleagues - they were family - and he often spoke of how grateful he was to work alongside such dedicated people.

In 2025, Ward fulfilled a lifelong dream by moving from Bismarck to Strawberry Lake.

Ward cherished lake life and the simple joy of being on the water with family, especially the long days on his Moomba. He spent countless summer days pulling kids behind the boat and zipping across the lake with a grin on his face - always the first to offer a ride and the last to head in for the day. Those moments perfectly captured his love of fun, family, and making memories together.

Ward also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He found peace and happiness in nature, whether he was hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying the quiet beauty of Strawberry Lake. The water, the outdoors, and the people he shared them with brought him and them unforgettable memories.

He was an avid sports fan who loved cheering for his favorite teams - the Twins, A's, Dolphins, Vikings, and, most passionately, the Bison. He was also an active member of the Velva Wildlife Club and, for more than 20 years, the Strawberry Lake Recreation Association.

Ever the problem-solver, he saw a need for local septic services and started his own pumping business. He proudly and humorously operated "The Stool Bus" for friends and neighbors for 10 plus years.

Ward will be remembered for his infectious smile, boundless energy, and unwavering kindness. He had a gift for making others feel valued, and always put their needs before his own.

Above all, Ward's greatest joy in life was his grandchildren, who were the true light of his world - just as he was in theirs. His love and devotion to his family knew no bounds. Ward never hesitated to help anyone in need, and lived every day with generosity, humor, and heart.

Ward is survived by his children, Karli (Jordan) Weidler, Velva, ND, and Kyle Knutson, OR; grandchildren, Harrison and Emmett Weidler; sister, Gale Knutson, Bismarck, ND; sister-in-law, Kim Knutson, Evans, CO; former spouse and friend Donna Knutson and her family, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ward was preceded in death by his parents, sister Laurie Tanner, brothers Dean, Neal, Boyd, and Gary Knutson.

Memorials are preferred to the Velva Wildlife Club.
