Warren Walter Behan, 76, passed away on July 4, 2024, in Carmel Hamlet NY. Born on September 18, 1947, in Hackensack NJ Warren led a life marked by compassion, dedication, and a love of learning and exploration.
Warren graduated from Mahwah High School before furthering his education at the University of Virginia, University of Louisville and Pace University. His professional career was diverse including roles as a Social Worker in Louisville, Kentucky, an Insurance Risk Manager in New York City, and ultimately his favorite roll as a Children's Librarian at The New Children's School: P.S.23 in the Bronx. Warren was cherished by his students at P.S. 23 to whom he offered not just education, but also genuine care and guidance.
Warren married Diana Drake Behan and they shared 52 years of marriage, filled with love and mutual support. Warren was devoted to and proud of his children and grandchildren. Warren is survived by his wife Diana, sons Robert Warren Behan, Kevin Drake Behan, grandchildren Kylie A. Behan, Redd (Hannah) Behan, his sister Brenda A. Behan, in-laws Jeffrey R. Drake and wife Eva, Marcia Drake Hickey and husband Michael and many nieces, nephews and friends. He held a special place in his heart for Lindsay Evitts and her daughter Ciana. Warren was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Audrey Behan.
Warren was an active member of Gilead Presbyterian Church in Carmel Hamlet, NY, where he was a member of the Church Session, participated in many committees and sang in the church choir. His hobbies included listening to a variety of music genres, solving crossword puzzles, and delving into topics related to science, nature and technology.
Warren's life was also marked by a profound love for travel and storytelling. He enjoyed trips to Disney, Disney Adventures and Cruises with his family. He brought stories to life through his animated read-aloud sessions by taking the roles of different characters; he is especially remembered for his portrayal of Mo Willems' character, Pigeon
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Warren's memory to organizations dear to Warren: The Boy Scouts of America (https://donations.scouting.org/#/national), an organization that reflects Warren's values of leadership and lifelong learning; The Putnam Humane Society (https://www.facebook.com/PutnamHumaneSociety/), where we adopted our special needs cats Aja and Tonks and Gilead Presbyterian Church (https://gileadchurch.org/). Warren's legacy of kindness, dedication, and curiosity will be remembered by all who knew him.
A private cremation has taken place.
The family will hold a Celebration 0f Warren's Life sometime in the near future at Gilead Presbyterian Church in Carmel, NY.
