Warren Olson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hampton Cove Funeral Home Cemetery & Crematory on Feb. 27, 2026.
Warren Richard "Dick" Olson, 90, passed away on February 25, 2026 in Huntsville, Alabama.

Dick was born in Sioux City, Iowa to Martha and Warren Olson on February 13, 1936. He was their one and only beloved son. Throughout his life he was guided by his faith, his love for his family and using his cognitive gifts to create new things.
He attended Iowa State University on a tennis scholarship, graduating with bachelor's degree in mathematics and a master's degree in physics with an emphasis in technology. During his college career he was active in the Army ROTC, played the trombone and competed on the NCAA championship tennis team.

He met the love of his life, Madalene Croudy, and they were married in 1959. They were blessed with three daughters Debi, Sandy and Michelle.
Dick was a technology leader in numerous companies where he created and led teams to develop software for things no one yet imagined - from space exploration, super computers and robotics. The companies he worked for included General Dynamics, Control Data, Honeywell, Synthetic Vision Systems, ETA, Iomega, Intergraph, and Unisys. These companies provided opportunities for him to use his talents, while providing adventures for his family as they moved from Iowa to California, Ontario, Minnesota, Michigan, Utah and finally Alabama.

Dick was grounded in his faith and was active in church communities, primarily in the Evangelical Covenant Church. He enjoyed mentoring and teaching about the Bible and mathematics. In addition, he loved playing tennis, golfing, boating, and skiing with family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Martha Olson. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Madalene Olson; three children Debi Thompson (Dan); Sandy Anderson (Dane); Michelle Culbreath (Mike); six grandchildren Courtney, Leah, Lauren, Luke, Rachel, Haley and five great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Hampton Cove Funeral Home in Owens Cross Roads, AL on Friday, March 6 at 2:00. Website: hamptoncovefh.com.
