Wayland Nash McKenzie Jr.

Wayland Nash McKenzie, Jr. age 83, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025 surrounded by his family. Born on November 22, 1941 in Albemarle, North Carolina, he was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Wayland Nash McKenzie, Sr and the eldest of three boys. He is survived by his brothers Bill (Susan) of Spruce Pine, NC and Charles (Janet) of Black Mountain, NC.
Wayland married the love of his life, Ellen Elizabeth Hatley, on July 17, 1966, and together they shared nearly six decades of devotion, partnership, and laughter. They put their roots in Columbia, MO where most of the family still lives. He was the proud father of two sons, Wayland Nash McKenzie, III (Heather) and Christopher Kirk McKenzie (Kim), and the beloved grandfather of Kati Lawrence (Trey), Jackie McKenzie, Keaton McKenzie, Madi McKenzie, Sidney McKenzie, Wayland Nash McKenzie, IV (Audrey), Thomas McKenzie and Gage McKenzie. He was also blessed with two great-grandsons, Tate and Tripp Lawrence, who brought him endless joy.
Wayland was a lifelong learner and educator. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from North Carolina State University and went on to complete his Ph.D. at the University of Missouri. Wayland devoted his career efforts to exploring pulmonary research, then mentoring medical students at The University of Missouri. His passion for knowledge and curiosity shaped not only his career, but the way he lived-with intention, thoughtfulness, and a desire to always understand more.
Known for his quick wit and animated spirit, Wayland had a gift for turning quiet moments into laughter. Whether teasing someone with a mischievous smile-" I guess you're wondering why I called this meeting"-or joking "just testing your food" before anyone could take the first bite, he filled the room with warmth and joy.
Music was one of the great loves of his life. He spent over 20 years playing trombone in the Kapital Kicks Orchestra, and if he wasn't making music, he was dancing to it-at a ball, in a dining hall, or anywhere a song was playing. His hands were always busy creating: as a researcher, a musician, a HAM radio enthusiast, a photographer, and a hobbyist who never stopped learning new skills. Those passions led to lifelong friendships and countless stories that will continue to be shared for years to come.
Wayland's life was rich with music, humor, faith, curiosity, and love. His legacy lives on in every person who was lucky enough to be shaped by his voice, his hands, his laughter, and his heart. Many thanks to the Eastwood staff of Lenoir woods for their love and excellent care.
Services will be held at Missouri United Methodist Church in Columbia, Missouri on November 18, 2025, visitation will begin at 1:00pm followed by funeral services at 2:00 PM. A celebration of life reception will follow at Lenoir Woods in the Fireside Room at 3:30pm.
