On January 2, 2004, he retired after 35 years from the U.S. Postal Service. In retirement, he drove a school bus for Tuia I.S.D., taking back the exact route he drove as a Senior in High School and he was known for handing out candy to the kids at they got off the bus at the end of the day. Wayne also delivered food for Meals on Wheels and participated in the Veterans Day programs at school.

Wayne enjoyed fishing, softball, and most of all, his family, children, and grandchildren. Wayne loved the Lord and he and his family attended the Sixth Street Church of Christ and then the Central Church of Christ in Tulia.
