Wendolyn Averhart Obituary
Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
Wendolyn Anne Averhart was born May 22, 1947 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to the late Donald Miller, Sr. and Fannie Miller. She was the second oldest of six childfren. Her family came to Detroit shortly after when she turned one year old. Wendy, as many knew her by, was beautiful inside and out. She was loved no matter where she went. As a child she played second mother to her youngest three siblings, even after she was married.
Wendolyn was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses while in her teen years. Every assembly or convention, she would talk about this guy always following her around. She never expected to fall in love with him. On October 5, 1968, she married Earl, the love of her life and stayed together until her untimely death. During that marriage, they had two children.
While working full time for the City of Detroit, she never missed a step. She always had time to make her family meals, and delicious meals they were. A famous line from a movie once said, "Minnie don't burn no chicken." Well Wendy, don't burn no food. No matter what she made, everyone loved it. Wendy had the gift of being everyone's mother. Whether they were a neighbor, relative, spiritual family or person on the street, she was mama.
Wendolyn retired from the City of Detroit in 1998. With her retirement funds, she did what she did best; remodeled her home. Anyone that knew Wendy knew that she was a one in a million. She was a dresser and liked nice things. If it was crocheting a blanket for a new baby, cooking a meal for a sick person, or buying an outfit for someone she loved, she was doing something nice for somebody. Even as simple as giving a person a compliment to uplift them.
Wendy loved spending time with her family. Once a month she would look forward to her family dinners with her children and grandchildren. She always made her famous macaroni and cheese, and sometimes bring gifts from the grands. She was never short on talking. She called her sister and children everyday or sent a text just to say goodnight, and let them know she was thinking about them. She loved her family so much that before bed every night, she had a habit of checking her families GPS locations telling them to go home, if she thought they were somewhere that she didn't approve.
Wendolyn leaves to cherish her husband of 56 years, Earl Averhart; her two children, Alicia and BranDon Averhart; her son-in-law Derrick Lofton; her three grandchildren Brian, Jaylin, and Nyla; her great grandson, Aiden; her sisters Stephanie McNulty and Regina (Cedric) Heath; her brother-in-laws, Wilson (Sylvia) Averhart, Benson (Cynthia) Averhart, Wardean Singleton, and Darius (Kimberly) Averhart; sister-in-laws Cynthian Moreland, and Vivian Averhart; one uncle, Odelle Watts; her bonus children, spiritual children, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives. Also, those who preceded her in death are her parents Donald Miller, Sr.and Fannie Miller; her brothers Donald Jr., James, and Kenneth Miller, Sr.; her in-laws, Henry Sr. and Annie Averhart; James McNulty II, Henry Averhart Jr, and Victoria Singleton, and many more she cherished.
