Wilbert Emil Scherzer, 89, of Midland, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2025 at his home. He was born March 23, 1936 in Merrill, son of the late Emil W. and Mabel P. (Wenzel) Scherzer. Will grew up in Freeland and attended Freeland schools. While there, he enjoyed playing football, a passion that followed him throughout his life. Will worked on the family farm in his youth and into adulthood. He then went to work for a foundry before eventually moving into the construction industry. Most of his working career was spent as a truck driver for 4-D Builders where he worked for nearly 35 years, retiring in 1998. To keep himself busy, Will joined Conley Security where he served as a security guard for a few years until finally deciding to retire for good. On December 3, 1955, Will married his sweetheart, Judith A. Ramey and the two spent over 50 years together. He always enjoyed bowling and for many years, Will and his family were in leagues together. Will also loved baseball and football, especially his Detroit teams. He and Judith would often take trips across Michigan and would travel south to visit friends and family. As he got older and Judith passed away, Will enjoyed daytrips to the Casino to pass the time.
Will is survived by his children, Cindy (Brady) Stock, Debbie (Earl) Carlson, John (Karla) Scherzer, Michael (Peggy) Scherzer, and Steve Scherzer; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; brother, Robert Scherzer; and sister, Dorothy Gutchak. In addition to his parents and wife, Judith, he was preceded in death by his brother, Melvin Scherzer and sister, Marion Supinger.
Funeral services will take place at 12 noon on Thursday, May 15, 2025 from Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street, with burial to follow in Midland Cemetery. Will's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider McLaren Hospice.
