Wilbur Ray Thomas

Wilbur Ray Thomas, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Born on March 22, 1939, in Richlands, North Carolina, Wilbur spent his formative years in a close-knit community that shaped the man he would become.

Dedicated to public service, Wilbur devoted 34 years of his life to law enforcement serving with the Jones County Sheriff's Office, Albert J. Ellis Airport Police, and retired from the Onslow County Sheriff's Office. During his tenure, he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community for his unwavering commitment to justice and public safety.

A devoted family man, Wilbur cherished the time spent with his loved ones. He was a steadfast husband to his wife Joyce, with whom he shared over 65 years of marriage, and a loving father to his son Chris, who, along with his wife Katie, resides in Richlands. Wilbur's legacy is also carried on by his brother Tommie Carlton Thomas, Sr. and his wife Nancy, who live in Jacksonville, a grandson, four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Wilbur was known for his tireless work ethic, a trait that was evident in his love for tending to his yard. In his earlier years, he had a fondness for horses and enjoyed participating in rodeo events. Later in life, he took comfort in the simplicity of watching old westerns, which reminded

him of the values and traditions he held dear.

Preceded in death by his parents, Harry Rayford Thomas and Bettie Mae Thomas, and brothers Harry Rayford Thomas, Jr. and Donnie Thomas, Wilbur leaves behind a family that will forever cherish his memory and the lessons he imparted.

The family will hold a funeral service on Wednesday, December 3rd at 2:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Home of Richlands with Ernie King officiating. Friends and family are welcome to attend and visit from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at the Griffin Family Cemetery on Old Comfort Rd.

Wilbur's absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
