Wilfred Charles "Bud" Volz, Formerly of Montrose, Age 94 years, died Monday February 5, 2024, at home. Visitation will be Friday February 9 from 1-8pm at Resurrection Funeral Home located at 40800 Hayes Rd,
Clinton Twp, MI 48038. Funeral services will be held on Saturday February 10 at 11am with visitation starting at 10am prior to the service. A private interment in Montrose Township Cemetery will be held at a later date.
Bud was born December 3, 1929 in Flint, to the late Walter and Ruth (Starkweather) Volz. He attended Montrose Community Schools where he received his high school diploma. From 1951-1953 he served in the United States Army in the Korean War. Upon his return he ran the family farm, helped his mother raise his younger brother and worked as a custodian and bus driver in Montrose Community Schools. In 1957 Bud enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America in
New Haven, Connecticut graduating in 1959. He began his career as a chef at Marygrove College and met the love of his life Juanita at Indiana Tech University where they managed the Saga Food Service cafeteria. He married Juanita on August 26, 1961. Together they ran the cafeteria at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana where they began a family with the birth of their daughter Lissa on September 16, 1962. In January 1963 they returned to Montrose where they farmed 40 acres across the road from his family farm and he developed and managed the first cafeteria in Montrose Community Schools and worked part-time at Zehnders of Frankenmuth. Starting in 1965 Bud was promoted to the Executive Chef position at Zehnder's of Frankenmuth until his retirement in 1986. Bud and Juanita enjoyed 10 years living in
Bradenton, Florida together before returning to
Fort Wayne, Indiana and then to
Clinton Township, Michigan until the time of his passing.
Bud was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 367 in
Montrose, Michigan. Playing cards and baking cookies were two of his favorite pastimes. He shared his musical talents with his accordion and piano playing. However, his greatest source of happiness was always his family. He was incredibly proud of his daughter Lissa and cherished his granddaughter Lindsay. The bond they shared was truly special, filled with endless love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Bud is forever loved by his daughter Lissa and granddaughter Lindsay, his brother and sister-in-law Don and Ruth Volz; nephews and nieces, Walter (Connie) Hitchcock, Benny (Lynette) Hitchcock, Joyce (Hans) Wohlfeill, Gary Hitchock, Bruce Hitchcock, Dale (Catherine) Hitchcock, Ronald Hitchcock, Hannah Volz, Micah (Amanda) Volz; twenty-one great nieces and nephews, treasured friend of the family Jeanine Walker, and countless friends who will remember Bud for his kind spirit and infectious laugh. Bud was preceded in death by his wife Juanita Volz; Parents Walter and Ruth; Sister Kathleen Hitchcock, Brother-in-law Jim Hitchcock; Nieces: Patricia Hitchcock and Betty Kay Leitelt.
In Lieu of Flowers, contributions can be made to a scholarship in Bud's honor at Montrose Community Schools for students pursuing culinary arts.
