William Virgil Watkins, a man whose life was a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of service, adventure, and enduring love, embarked on his final flight on August 5, 2025, in Claremore, Oklahoma. Born in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, on January 8, 1948, Bill, as he was affectionately known, carried the spirit of his Osage heritage throughout his remarkable journey.
Growing up in Pawhuska, he laid the foundation for a life filled with curiosity and ambition. It was in his hometown that he met and fell in love with Shelia Green, a love story that would blossom into a lifelong partnership. They exchanged vows on December 31, 1967, a union that would weather the storms of life and celebrate 57 years of unwavering devotion.
Bill’s early career saw him at Look Magazine in Iowa, a brief but formative chapter before the call to serve his country. In 1969, he was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Though trained in communications, his aptitude for typing led him to a different path, serving in the JAG department. He skillfully managed administrative tasks and even found himself chauffeuring a distinguished Colonel, a testament to his adaptability and quiet competence.
Following his military service, Bill returned to civilian life and began a 38-year career at PSO-AEP, a testament to his dedication and work ethic. He retired in May 2010, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and commitment.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Bill was a man of diverse passions. The rhythm and melodies of music resonated deeply within him, with The Beatles holding a special place in his heart. He meticulously documented his life and the lives of his loved ones through the lens of his camera, creating cherished family photo albums with his wife that serve as a testament to his dedication to preserving memories. He was also a licensed radio operator, connecting with the world through the airwaves. But perhaps his most profound passion was for the skies. He earned his pilot's license, soaring above the earth and embracing the freedom of flight. He was a modern man, ever embracing technology, and quickly adapted to the burgeoning computer age.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, Francis Watkins, his mother, Theresa Watkins, his brother, Louis Watkins, and his sister, Jane Bohannan. He is now reunited with them, soaring free in the heavens.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, carried forward by his beloved wife, Shelia Watkins of Porter, OK. He is also survived by his children: Kevin Watkins and his wife Peggy of Broken Arrow; Greg Watkins of Broken Arrow; and Christina Kennedy and her husband Paul of Coweta. His memory will continue to be cherished by his grandchildren: Bryce Kennedy and his wife Skyler of Broken Arrow; and Kirstin Blair and her husband Kyle of Broken Arrow; and his great-granddaughter, Saraya Blair of Broken Arrow. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandnephews.
Bill’s spirit of generosity and his enduring love will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever remain a beacon, guiding us through the skies of our own lives.
Services to celebrate William’s life will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at 12:00 pm at Brown Funeral Home Chapel, in Coweta, OK, followed by interment at Fort Gibson Cemetery at 2:30 pm.
