William Brooks Obituary

Published by King-Tears Mortuary, Inc. - Austin on Aug. 8, 2013.
William Brooks, Sr., 95, born in Bastrop, TX on August 21, 1917, was called home while surrounded by his loving family on August 8, 2013. He was a proud WWII Navy veteran of the Pacific Theater and a devoted 75-year member of Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he served for years as Senior Deacon. His love of family was an inspiration to all and he never met a stranger. He loved to laugh, garden, fish, go out to eat with friends, talk politics, & socialize at every opportunity. If ever someone was in need of encouragement, a kind word, or prayer, he was there. But above all, he loved to testify about his personal relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He lived, believed, and followed The Word as few have or do. He was a walking history lesson and born story teller his entire life. He put those skills to good use over the past several years when he became an annual honored speaker at Mathews Elementary during Black History Month, where all the children knew him affectionately as "Paw Paw Brooks". One of his greatest gifts was the ability to make each person in his life feel as if they were something very special to him---because they were. Brother Brooks was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Willie Mae, and his children Vivian Brooks Berkley and Carroll Ann Brooks Johnson. He is survived by his children William Brooks, Jr., Mary Alice Brooks Williams, Grace Brooks Smith, George Brooks, Sr., Brenda Brooks Rogers, Eloise Brooks, 19 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, 29 great-great-grandchildren, as well as countless "adopted" grands & great-grands, including his namesake, Brooks Warden, and his entire Greater Mt. Zion Church family. His life and legacy will remain a testament that God works through man, to man. Services entrusted to King-Tears Mortuary, Inc.

Happy Birthday Young Man! Today would of been the hardest day to reach you being that your phone would of been ringing off the hook. But I learned to wish you a week an advance Bday and take you for your Bday meal.Wish I had a dollar to mail to you and tell you don't spend it in one place like you would say and do. Missing you on this day!

To the entire Brooks family, our prayers of peace and comfort are going up for each of you. Just know that Deacon Brooks 'sowed' seeds of love, faith and encouragement wherever he went. You and others he poured into are living testaments of his Godly walk.

God introduced me to Mr. Brooks on a plane in about 2001 (we think). He was like a MAGNET – such style, eloquence, good humor, spoke with such love of his wife and love of God.
We talked all the way to Chicago and he gave me his card. He reminded so much of my own Dad. Words cannot convey how intelligent, opinionated, compassionate, well informed, classy dresser, FUNNY he was– we laughed so much !
Lunch at Hoovers was like dining with a celebrity – people coming over to say hello and shake his hand. Same thing at Mt Zion. William prayed long distance with me and my loved ones in Minnesota. His wonderful children welcomed me with kindness and more laughter. I told Brenda and Elouise “y'know, I love your Dad” – they said “Get in line”. I thank God everyday for the decade plus of friendship of William Brooks – the Best Looking Man in the State of Texas.

Loved this man to no end! I was so saddened and heart broken when I heard the news. The first words he spoke to me was at GMZ. He said welcome any visitor usually becomes a member. He was right I joined soon after and we became very close and I called him Young Man as he called me Old Lady. I will cherish every moment and time that we spent talking about Christ along with life. Most of which we spent at his favorite place HOOVER'S. He was full of wisdom and knowledge! I pray at this time for the Brooks Family seeing how you were raised by a wonderful Man of God. Even though it was a short amount of time that I knew him he had a powerful impact on me. So words can't express how you must feel for your great lost. My sincere condolences to you Brooks Family and may the LORD guide in this time. RIP My Young Man
