William Burke Obituary

William H. Burke, Jr.

William H. Burke, Jr., 66, of Margate, N.J., formerly of Kensington, Md., passed away on February 10, 2026. Son of the late William and Naomi Burke, William was raised in Maryland and graduated from Rock Terrace High School. He worked for National Naval Medical Center, now known as Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, in Bethesda, Md., for 17 years. While in Maryland, William was active in the Arc of Montgomery County, where he participated in swimming and track & field, earning numerous medals. Upon the passing of his parents, William relocated to Margate, N.J., where he resided with his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Thomas Rhoads. He became very active in both the Arc of Atlantic County and Special Olympics. William was a wonderful athlete, who medaled several times, in both bowling and bocce ball. Along with sports, William loved music, dancing, caring for his pug, Ming, and cheering on his two favorite teams: The Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins. Above all, he especially loved spending time at his family beach house in Bethany Beach, Del., numerous trips to Walt Disney World and countless family vacations. Affectionately known as "Skipper," what William valued most was time spent with his family and friends. Family was most important to him and he leaves behind to cherish his memory his two sisters: Barbara Rhoads (late husband, Thomas) and Kathleen Tyler (Samuel Schohl) along with his three nieces: Christine Brown (Christopher), Kelly Cusumano (Gregory) and Lauren Tyler (Kendall Armstrong); and nephew Thomas Rhoads (Francis Ramos). William was the best great-uncle to Matthew, Daniel, Mallory, Kendall, Heath, Hudson, Jonathan and Dan. William was truly a joy to everyone who knew him. He embodied the definition of love. A visitation will be held on Monday, February 16, 2026 starting at 10 a.m. at Epiphany Church, 2801 Ventnor Avenue in Longport, N.J., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. William will be laid to rest at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Md. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in William's memory, to Special Olympics, Attn: Memorial Giving, 2600 Virginia Avenue NW, 11th Floor, Washington, DC 20037. Condolences may be extended to the family at ghwimberg.com.

What a wonderful guy, I used to work at Strike Zone bowling alley. Billy was one of my favorite customers. I always looked forward to Wednesday night when the ARC bowled. I have such fond memories. I'm sorry for your loss and sending my thoughts and prayers for the family.
