He graduated from Belmont Hill Academy, MA in 1943, enlisted in the Army, and was sent to Fort Devens, MA in September of 1943. Bill completed boot camp with the 63rd Infantry at Camp Dorn MS and was assigned to M Company, 3rd Battalion - Heavy Weapons Division of the 337th Regiment of the 85th Custer Division as a machine gunner. He left Newport News, VA and arrived in Naples, Italy in March 1944. Bill fought in the Battle for Terracina and Formia near Anzio, cleared the town of Cassino after the battle at Monte Cassino and moved up the Appian Way liberating Rome on June 4, 1944. Bill and Alberta loved to travel and enjoyed homes in the Berkshires, Gloucester, MA and at Grand Harbor and the Regency in Vero Beach, FL. Bill was particularly fond of his cottage on Gurnet Point, MA where the family spent summers fishing, boating and swimming. Bill began his career at Lever Brothers in Boston but with his great love of cars, was destined for the automobile business. He worked for Corcoran Motors, then as Sales Manager for Butler Motors and Framingham Ford until he ventured out on his own and bought Lee Ford in Lee, MA in 1973. Dearest Dad, You were such a big part of my life I am not sure if I will ever be able to fill the gap you created when you left this world. The absence of you and Mom leaves me very sad with a huge sense of loss. On the other hand, you both created an amazing story together that will never end. Your children gained so much from your love and devotion. I can see that it has been passed down to us and hopefully future generations by the sense of duty, strength, generosity, consideration and fun you have cultivated in all of us. I hope you are once again happy in the company of one another and I look forward to being with you again one day. With much love, Your daughter Trish

Dear Dad,
You were well loved and you loved well. Your sense of humor was extraordinary and you so often kept us in stitches. Your storytelling moments were rich remembrances of friends (Bud) and escapades and times past. You shared your war experiences with us and we traveled to Italy together, finding Monte Compatre on a complete lark (the guiding hand of God). As we walked through the cemetery at Anzio I was overwhelmed by how lucky we kids were to have you while so many other young men died beside you. I don't know why some die young and others live to 92 but I know that you lived your life well. You gave me faith, and confidence and courage. You taught me to give generously and to forgive willingly. You showed me how to listen and how to speak up for what I believed was right. You were proud of me and that filled me with hope that whatever I accomplished in life, it was enough. I am every bit your daughter and I will miss you every day of the rest of my life. Fly with the angels, Dad!

Dear Father and My Dear Family,

Take comfort in knowing all is well. Know that the blessings we have all received during your and our extraordinary lives continue. Kindness, compassion, generosity and a steady moral compass continue to guide us on lifes path. Rest peacefully and give mom a huge giant hug and a kiss for me. May we all now rejoice in your well-being.

I am very sorry for your loss, loosing a loved one is truly a heartbreaking experience, but its uplifting to know that God promises us in Isaiah 65:17 a near future in which not only wont we feel the pain of loosing a loved one anymore but we wont even remember how it felt. Our pain will be erased and we will be happy once again.

My condolences to the Caffrey family. Your father/grandfather was considerate, but strong, always honorable, loving to everyone in his his family and respected by everyone for his determination and, yet, easy going manner. He set the bar for civility and generosity of heart and spirit. I'm proud and feel blessed to have known him.

Dearest Grandad, I have spent this week sorting through a large quantity of the photos that were taken of you throughout your life - from your baby book to more recent photos of you with your Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. One of the things that is particularly clear in these photos is the love you held for the people in your life: your sister, parents, friends, wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and later on in your life you even opened your heart up, once again, to Dee. I would say you lived a blessed life, but that would imply the interference of outer influences. While fate and God do have their roles to play, the love I see reflected in these photos is something that you actively built, nurtured, and cherished throughout your 92 wonderful years on earth. I am going to miss you Grandad. Your Fish.

Hi, I'm a friend of his granddaughter Anne Novack. She always spoke so highly of her grandfather, and reading his obituary told me so much more. I am sorry for all of his family for his loss, and the sorrow they now feel. Take solace in having been part of his glorious life!
